The brown bear, of which grizzly and kodiak are
subspecies, is widely represented in Europe, as in North America. Much larger
than the black bear (baribal), the brown bear with some specimens over 700 kg,
is a solitary animal whose lifestyle remains mostly nocturnal, even if it can
happen to walk during the day. A carnivorous animal, just like its polar
cousin, the brown bear feeds primarily on berries, fruits or roots, but does
not disdain salmon that come up rivers, as well as small mammals and insects.
Present in France in the Pyrenees, the brown bear which is part of a program of

is estimated at less than 35,000 individuals worldwide. The "Polar Bear
International" foundation has been advocating for the protection of this
species for several years.
