I was 10 years old and I
lived in Paris with my mother when she told me that we were going to live in
Germany for a year, and I can not say that I jumped for joy. Leave my school,
my friends ...
Anyway, a few months
later, I found myself for the first time in a class where girls and boys, who
were a year younger than me, almost passed me by one head. From this year spent
abroad, one thing remained particularly in my memory: the
"Klassenfahrt", what we call in French school trip. But beware: the
German "Klassenfahrt" has nothing to do with French school trips.
In France, you can go
with your class or other students to discover a French region or a foreign
country for a language course. Teachers see it mainly as a pedagogical
interest: traveling is then a more or less fun and enjoyable way of teaching
pupils outside a classroom. But the German "Klassenfahrt" is not just
a linguistic or cultural trip. No. It is like an initiatory journey to
establish a group spirit and develop the autonomy and social skills of
students. In my class, I remember that we spent 10 to 15 minutes each week
preparing the "Klassenfahrt" with the head teacher. It was almost a
subject in its own right: choosing the destination, the hostel where we would
be sure to meet other groups to make the 400 moves. Then, the development of
the program: visiting castles, zoos, sports outings, treasure hunts, rally,
pajama parties, we had the right to offer everything! Each student had a very
specific task that was not to be evaded!
I have an extraordinary
memory of this crazy week, but what definitely marked me is the highlight of
the "Klassenfahrt", the "Nachtwanderung", the night hike! I
remember we had to sneak into total darkness through a terrifying forest for a
time that seemed endless. We stood by the hand, we stumbled, we screamed, some,
completely frightened, even burst into tears! It must be said that there was
really enough to have the chocoles! The boys took the opportunity to tell the
most frightening stories possible for us, girls, to come and snuggle in their
arms. The most exciting night I have ever known! It ended with a big wood fire
around which we tasted "Bratäpfel", apples cooked on embers. We were
a little cold, we hugged each other, we would have liked the day never to rise.
The following year, I returned to France, and I found
my school. There, I regretted the atmosphere of my German class, but I was too
small to understand exactly what I regretted. It was during the trip organized
by the English teacher in London that I understood the difference. Of course,
we had fun too, especially when we hid in the toilets of the Tate Gallery Museum
to escape the third Museum visit of the day, but one essential thing was
missing: Not feeling like we had chosen and organized our trip ourselves, it
was not really OUR trip. When, on the way back, I spoke to the English teacher
with nostalgia for our "Nachtwanderung", our night hike, he looked at
me with frightened eyes: never, ever, such an expedition would be allowed in
France for obvious security reasons!
