More than 650 children were killed last
year in the country according to a UNICEF report. That's an increase of 20%
compared to 2015.
Violence against children in Syria has
reached "their worst" level in 2016. In the country, where the war
has raged for six years, more than 650 children have been killed in the last
year says in a report released Monday by the United Nations Children's Fund
(Unicef). This represents a 20% increase over the year 2015. Of these children,
255 were killed in or near a school, proving that they are deliberately
targeted.

"The verified cases of murder,
mutilation and recruitment of children have increased significantly" in
that same year, writes Unicef in a statement.
"The degree of suffering is unprecedented. Millions of children in Syria
are attacked every day, their lives are completely upset, "said Geert
Cappelaere, Unicef's director for the Middle East and North Africa. "Every
child is scarred for life, with terrible consequences for their health,
well-being and future," he says.
850 child soldiers in 2016
While the majority of children are killed
by bomb explosions, Unicef also points to
reduced access to care. According to the organization, many die of diseases
"that could easily be avoided".
Finally, according to the study, 850
children were recruited to fight in the conflict, "including, in extreme
cases, those of executioners, kamikazes or prison guards". A figure, again,
marked increase over the year 2015, since it has doubled.

The conflict in Syria began on March 15,
2011 with the suppression by the regime of Bashar al-Assad of peaceful demonstrations
demanding reforms. Since then, it has become more complex and now involves a
multitude of local and international actors as well as jihadist groups in a
fragmented territory. The war killed more than 310,000 people and forced more
than half of the population to flee their homes.
After six years of conflict, "nearly
6 million children now depend on humanitarian assistance" and "more
than 2.3 million are currently refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and
Iraq," writes Unicef. According to the UN body, 280,000 children live in
besieged areas without access to food or medicine.
