THE PENGUIN
Physical description
The penguin is a marine bird of the family Spheniscidae. It has an elongated body, black on the back and head, with a yellow mark on the neck, while the belly is white. He has two flat and rigid wings that he uses to swim.

The largest penguins can reach more than 1 meter in height for a weight up to 40 kg, while the smaller species are about 45 cm for 1 kg.
His place of life
All penguin species are located in the Southern Hemisphere. They are found in particular, according to the species, in Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, on the coasts of South America and Africa.

They live mostly at sea or near the sea and cold currents, and return to land only to breed and rear their chicks.
His diet
The penguin feeds mainly, depending on the species, Antarctic krill (a kind of small shrimp found in the waters of the Southern Ocean), fish and squid.
His reproduction
Penguins are able to reproduce between 3 and 8 years old. For most species, the breeding season is from spring to summer. The female lays one or two eggs that will be incubated alternately by her and by the male, during 1 or 2 months.

At the end of this incubation period, the chick will break the shell of the egg and come out. It is only covered with a fine down that does not allow him to go to sea to get his food. While waiting for his adult feathers to grow, he is fed by his parents who regurgitate their food for 2 to 13 months.
His life expectancy
Penguins live on average 15 to 20 years.
The shout of the penguin
The cry of the penguins is called braying or jabbling. Each penguin has a cry of its own and identifies it. It is thanks to this that parents can recognize their chicks among a multitude of penguins.
Particular signs
Although it has wings, the penguin is unable to fly. It is this characteristic that distinguishes him from the penguin with whom he is often confused. These wings are however very well suited to swimming and diving. For example, some species can swim up to 35 km / h or dive more than 500 m.
