Built on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, between the Atlantic Ocean and the vast Argentinian Pampas, Buenos Aires had its moment of glory during the inter-war years, when proud, beautiful and immensely rich, she dreamed of becoming the Paris of the Southern Hemisphere. Project sublime, foolish. Half a century after the end of the golden age, we still believe it ...
From the Italian-Andalusian Palermo of Jorge Luis Borges to the Microcentro - a kind of North American downtown that seems to have been revisited by Baron Haussmann - through its vast and peaceful suburbs and the green banks of the river, Buenos Aires remains the most elegant megacity Latin America and one of the most mesmerizing. Favored by the subtropical climate, its sweetness of life is due to its luxury of space, its peaceful rhythm, its innumerable parks and to the legendary hospitality of its inhabitants. An intellectual exiled at the end of the world, the Porteño is melancholy and charming, proud of his Andalusian and Genoese origins as much as of his French culture.
And how not to mention porteña night? The smells of grilled meat
that rise above the large parillas in the open air, the soft dampness of the
tropical night, the milongas where we dance the tango every night in stiletto
heels and varnished slippers on old tunes of a century where there is talk of
unhappy love and happiness, which as everyone knows never returns. But in
Buenos Aires, more than anywhere else, it is still possible to dream ...
CityDesigned on an orthogonal plan, the financial and administrative center of Buenos Aires encompasses the districts of Monserrat, the historic seat of power, and the more modern Microcentro. From Tortoni Café to Florida Garden, it's also the elite district of the intelligentsia porteña . Noisy and chaotic during the day, desert at night, downtown Buenos Aires leads west to the docks of Puerto Madero, refitted in the 2000s, a breath of fresh air at the gates of the smoky city.
Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur
Far from the Klaxons and the exhaust pipes of the city center and yet so close, the vast nature reserve which extends on 350 ha in the east of Puerto Madero attracts every weekend many Porteños come to cycle there. family, among rose gardens, ducks and flamingos.
El Sur
The South: this is what Buenos Aires looked like before the major urban works of the 20th century. The noble San Telmo evokes the beautiful neighborhoods of Seville, and the Boca, more popular, the lowlands of Cadiz. On the border of San Telmo and La Boca are some of the most interesting bars in the capital. Every Sunday morning, the San Telmo Fair sells its booty around Plaza Dorrego.
Teatro Colón
Inaugurated in 1908 and named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the Teatro Colón has no equal in Latin America. By offering itself this superlative room, Buenos Aires was eager to attract the great names of lyric theater in the southern hemisphere; from Arturo Toscanini to Maria Callas, they all came together. More than a century after its inauguration, the Teatro Colón has lost nothing of its beauty.
Cementerio of the Recoleta
All historical figures of the nineteenth century. rest there, without forgetting the great patrician families of the country. The Recoleta cemetery is the last residence of all Argentine gratin. Even "Evita" Perón found a place there, not without raising some eyebrows. Near the cemetery and the Pilar Basilica - the finest example of Baroque architecture in Buenos Aires - are the posh Recoleta and Retiro districts.
Barrio Norte
To the west of Recoleta is the Barrio Norte district, home to some of the finest shops in Buenos Aires, starting with the prestigious El Ateneo Bookstore. More discreet, the Museo Xul Solar preserves the memory of one of the most talented and original artists of the Argentine history.
Palermo
Built in the late nineteenth century. on lands expropriated by the dictator Rosas, Palermo embodies perfectly the lifestyle of the portie bourgeoisie of the Belle Epoque. Immortalized by JL Borges, who lived there all his life, it is now a quiet residential area, dotted with bars and restaurants. Bougainvillea, jasmine and lush roses project their scented shadow on the colorful stucco facades of its beautiful Art Nouveau houses.
Museums of the Avenue del Libertador
Grouped around the avenue, these three museums are at the heart of the cultural life of the Argentine capital: the very classic National Museum of Fine Arts, the extravagant Museum of Decorative Arts and MALBA, dedicated to modern art and contemporary. This is an opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful collections in South America.
Parks
Designed by the French botanist Charles Thays (1849-1934), the vast park complex that separates the city from the river was initially devoted to sport and elegant wanderings, like the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. Here, the chestnut tree gives way to the majestic ombú , a giant native of La Pampa, to jacaranda, which after each flowering covers the lawns with a thick mauve carpet, and palo borracho , with its swollen trunk, its thorny bark and its cottony fruits as big as pillows.
Museo Casa de Yrurtia
Located in the north of Buenos Aires, the quiet residential area
of Belgrano is home to one of the most beautiful
architectural ensembles in the city, the Museo Casa de Yrurtia. Home of the sculptor Rogelio Yrurtia
(1879-1950), this vast neocolonial house and its sumptuous garden are a haven
of peace in the modern city. A little further, the gazebo of the park of
Barrancas welcomes every Sunday the tangueros of Belgrano for a milonga in the
open air.
