Biography: Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004)
President of the United Arab Emirates from 1966 to 2004 and Emir of
Abu Dhabi.
Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born in the oasis of Buraimi, around
1918.
His childhood takes place in Djebel Hadjar, among the Bedouins who
take charge of his education. He can not read or write. In 1928, his father
died assassinated and his brother Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan ascended the
throne. In 1948, Shakhbut left the Buraimi region to his brother Zayed. As the
leader of the Bedouin tribe, Zayed makes every effort to develop the resources
of his region, while remaining close to his people. He makes diplomacy prevail
in the family. Since assassinations are frequent in the families of the sheiks,
he advocates discussion and listening. Thus, Great Britain creates the Trucial
Oman Scouts to watch over the safety of the leaders.
In the 1950s, the export of oil developed. Despite the considerable
gains, his brother decided not to benefit the country of a possible growth.
In the 1960s, oil production increased dramatically. Great Britain
then decides to cancel the agreement and to restore another with Zayed in 1966.
He began a vast project of construction, progress for the country
and implantation of trees.
In 1971, he founded the United Arab Emirates Federation, currently
composed of seven countries. This wealth eliminates the border issue more
easily.
He died on November 2, 2004.
