Nicknamed "The Spice Island", Zanzibar is located off the northern coast of Tanzania. For centuries, people have been looking for cloves. Its port has been one of the most important comptoirs of Africa. It has been conquered by almost every major exploratory civilization of humanity, from Assyrians to British, to Chinese and Portuguese. With its winding alleyways, bazaars, stalls, mosques and majestic palaces, the city of a thousand scents is one of the most fascinating places on the island.

Climate

The climate is mostly hot and humid. The rains are particularly abundant between March and May, the least sunny and stifling period of the year. On the contrary, between June and October, the precipitation is much less important and the sea breezes cool the atmosphere. The waters of the lagoons are warm all year round.

Geography

Located in eastern Tanzania, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Zanzibar Archipelago has seventy islands, the main ones being Unguja, Pemba and Mafia.

TYPES OF LANDSCAPE

The old quarters of Stone Town, built of black coral stone, are home to many archaeological remains, witnesses of Zanzibar's rich historical past. The high houses with carved doors, the old Arab fort and the "House of Wonders" (Beit el-Ajaib) are other treasures of the city.

The white sand beaches of "Spice Island" are very popular, especially to the north and more and more to the east. Those of Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar, are more confidential, but the coral reefs and the coconut decorations of this paradisiacal place continue to grow their reputation today international.
