Emirate of Abu Dhabi
The emirate of Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven emirates of the country: its area represents 80% of the total area of the country. It is also the most populated.
As for natural resources, it is now the only emirate to have oil and gas in abundant quantities. The emirate alone holds nearly 10 percent of the world's known oil reserves and 5 percent of known natural gas reserves. For more information, read our article on the economy of the United Arab Emirates
His emir, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, is also the country's president.
Long back on the media scene compared to Dubai, the recent economic crisis, which hit Dubai hard, propelled Abu Dhabi into the spotlight.
Add to that the welcome of a grand prix Formula 1 recently, plus some other great achievements, and we begin to hear the name of Abu Dhabi in the European media (or Abu Dhabi, for the French media).
The city of Abu Dhabi is of course the most important of the emirate, but among the sites that deserve to be talked about, you will find in the same emirate the oases of Liwa, and Al Ain.
Spelling: how should one write Abu Dhabi?
The only "true" spelling of the name is in Arabic: أبو ظبي, (transcribed'Abū aby in European characters).
Two orthographies are officially recognized in French, namely "Abu Dhabi" and "Abu Dhabi", but you will also find different variants: Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi ...
In English, Abu Dhabi is used; this is the spelling that you will see in application in the United Arab Emirates, and on this site.
Tourism: Must see and do in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi City
The city of Abu Dhabi has long been uninterested in tourism. But things are changing. And in the United Arab Emirates, when things change, they change very quickly. Abu Dhabi is developing at an impressive speed, and tourist sites are increasing. Among the main attractions:
Emiraties palace, one of the most luxurious hotels in the world,
Sheikh Zayed Mosque (Sheikh Zayed Mosque), the 7th largest mosque in the world (photo),
Saadiyat Island, the island of culture (still under construction),
Yas Island: Formula 1 Grand Prix and Yas Waterworld Water Park
The Ferrari World amusement park,
Al-Forsan City; large leisure and sports complex located in Khalifa City.
In the rest of the emirate of Abu Dhabi

the desert of Rub-al-Khali, the largest desert in the world,
the oases of Liwa and the glowing dunes,
Al Ain, the second largest city of the emirate,
Jebel Hafeet, next to Al Ain,
Bani Yas Island and its Arabian Oryx.
Abu Dhabi City Organization
Abu Dhabi

The city of Abu Dhabi is organized "American", squared by blocks, quite logically.

From the Corniche, the street that borders the sea and the beach, opposite Lulu Island, in the North-West of the island. True landmark, it is stamped Route N ° 1. As you move away, all the streets parallel to the Corniche are marked by odd numbers.

Perpendicular to the Corniche, come the even streets. The 2, in the center of the island, is also called Airport Road. Northeast side come 4, 6 and 8.
On the other side (South-West), the even streets go to N ° 32.

This numbering system is convenient enough to locate, especially since addresses do not exist in Abu Dhabi (it will often be necessary to explain your way to taxi drivers), and that the streets all have several different names (one or several names in Arabic, plus a nickname in English).
Traffic and parking in Abu Dhabi
Traffic is a sport in the UAE, and the city of Abu Dhabi is no exception.

Most people drive quite badly to Abu Dhabi. The worst are certainly the taxis, which drive like feet (so much so that one sometimes wonders if they do not drive with the feet).
Unexpected queuing changes, non-use of the turn signal, sudden braking and unpredictable behavior, everything is there.
However, since the speed is not very high because of the often difficult traffic (the speed is limited to 60 km / h normally, thus allowed up to 80 km / h), the accidents are rarely serious.

What is more dangerous on the other hand, it is the Indians and Pakistanis who often cross the roads of night, without hurrying too much. With the headlights opposite, they are very difficult to see, resulting in a danger easily imaginable.

That said, rest assured: the way to drive to the Emirates is quite exemplary compared to countries like India, Lebanon or Egypt.

Parking, for a long time free, is paying off in Abu Dhabi.
Already effective on the Corniche and the streets that border, Mawaqif is repainting all the parking spaces to spend pay.
A color code has been put in place:
- Yellow and gray: no parking, Mawaqif passes the fines (200 to 500 AED), and its agents are quite effective for that.
- blue and black: paid parking, normal rate (2 AED per hour in 2010)
- blue and white: paid parking, VIP rate (3 AED per hour)
- white and gray, or gray only: free parking (endangered species)

Parking is usually free at night (from 10 pm to 8 am) and on Friday all day. But be careful, these times are likely to change, especially during Ramadan. Always refer to local instructions, parking meters or informative signs.
