The fly anthomyiids

Anthomyiidae (Anthomyiidae) are insects of the order Diptera (Diptera), of the suborder Brachycera, which have only two wings, the second atrophied pair serving as stabilizing balance during flight.

This family includes a multitude of flies, more than 640 species in North America, which resemble sarcophagids, but less squat with a less bulging abdomen in proportion to the thorax. They are more often in shades of yellow, brown, black and gray. Transparent wings may sometimes have gray or brown marks. The legs go from black to yellow.
The majority have some hair on the chest, legs, and head. Big, usually red eyes are placed on either side of the head, with tiny antennae in the center of the forehead. The color, the patterns that decorate them, and the arrangement of the hairs help to identify them, but there are individuals who can only be precisely dissected by a dissection to which they belong.

Anthomyiids are insects that, when grown, feed on plant matter or pollen, but some species are predators. The larva usually feeds either on roots, leaves, or plant seeds depending on the species. Some feed on fungi, feces, and decaying matter.

Some species, which feed on pollen, are useful insects because they participate in the pollination of plants. Others who feed on decaying plant material help speed up the process. Naturally, they are important in the food chain, because they are the food of many animals, birds and insects, both in the larval state and in the adult state. Their main predators are birds, frogs, and arachnids, asilid flies and other carnivorous insects.

Adults can be observed on the flowers and foliage of the plants where they feed. Like other insects, they pass through various metamorphoses to pass from the egg to the larva, which will moult several times to grow and become a nymph (pupa) that finally gives the adult insect able to fly and reproduce.

Anthomyiids are not dangerous to us because they do not bite or bite. It is still best to wear gloves to handle them, to avoid contact with bacteria or other.

The size varies according to the species, and goes from two millimeters to one centimeter.
