Spiders
are part of the species "arachnids" indeed they are not insects. They
have eight legs and lack wings or antennae just like scorpions, mites, ticks or
uropyges.
Contrary
to popular belief, the spider does not spend time waiting for a prey to get
lost in its silk cloth, many of them are ruthless hunters, always on the lookout
for prey potential. Although it is not the animal most appreciated by humans
Arachnophobia (an irrational fear), it is a major player in the regulation of
many insects.
They have
a formidable weapon, their venom, which can be used to kill prey or deter
predators. There are more than 200 species capable of causing serious
consequences for humans; We must be reassured that the most dangerous are found
in the tropics, besides the most widespread bites certainly cause significant
pain, but without significant danger.
Spiders
have a great ability to adapt to different natural environments, they are found
from the 2 poles to the tropics, in the terrestrial space and the aquatic
space; however, they have not yet conquered the territories of high mountains
or salty waters.
This
animal has the ability to produce silk using tiny articulated protuberances,
which are visible on the ventral side at the end of the abdomen. The silk, in
the liquid state in the glands, solidifies once in contact with the free air.
These silk threads are surprisingly strong, in fact they have a greater
resistance than steel.
They
produce different types of silk that can be both sticky and slimy.
Spiders
can be classified according to their life expectancy. The so-called seasonal spiders
live from 6 to 8 months at the most, and after laying their eggs they die.
Annual spiders can expect to live 1 to 2 years, they die once the eggs have
hatched. Perennial spiders, such as tarantulas, have the longest life
expectancy since they are several years old.
In order
to grow, spiders must get rid of their exoskeleton, to do this they moult; they
can do it up to 13 times before reaching adulthood. Some moult about once a
year to adult age (the mygale).
