What is happiness ?
Happiness is a state of complete satisfaction characterized by its stability and durability. It is not enough to feel a little contentment to be happy. An intense joy is not happiness. An ephemeral pleasure either. Happiness is a global state. The happy man is satisfied. He lives a form of fullness. Its situation is stable: it presents a balance and only an external element could modify it.
As an optimist of human life, happiness is universally sought after. It is often presented as the highest goal of existence. The one that every man seeks to reach, consciously or not.
To be happy is an individual and human experience. It is the man who knows happiness, not the animal. A stable and prolonged state in which one lives a total dissatisfaction, misfortune is the opposite of happiness. It represents the situation leaked by everyone, that nobody is looking for voluntarily.
The notion of happiness is intimately linked to desire. To be happy would be to fulfill all one's desires, or at least fulfill all one's "important" desires. The happy man accomplishes the goals he has set for himself, the ones that have value for himself. Happiness is therefore anchored in the individual, in his projects and his representations.
The conception of the happiness of one will not be that of the other. Political utopias aimed at the happiness of "all" are potentially dangerous. They risk imposing a particular vision of what happiness is, acting in a paternalistic way, and producing the opposite of the desired effect.
Undetermined content
The "content" of happiness is indeterminate. There is no agreement on specific and specific elements that would constitute happiness. Wealth, beauty and power do not make happiness. No concrete element can be put forward. Believing that a Ferrari is bad or going on TV to be happy is an illusion.
When there is an agreement on what makes you happy, it deals only with vague elements, general principles. Love, friendship, pleasure are surely components of happiness. But these elements are deeply abstract. Knowing that friendship matters does not give me good and true friends.
We often do not know what can lead us to our happiness. What would allow me, personally, to become happy is not clear to myself. I can think that some things will make me happy (a material good, to realize a project, etc.), certainly. But I can never know for sure that these elements will really make me happy (present or future).

Beyond a common aspiration to be happy, what produces happiness is therefore indeterminate.
