The speed of technological innovation

The advance of knowledge and the proliferation of "technological" products are extremely rapid, especially since the 1950s. Moreover, everything relating to the human species has been growing very rapidly since then (population growth, consumption of goods, energy, etc.). The rate of evolution of techno-scientific progress is very high, of several orders of magnitude larger than the evolution of species or the geological time scale. In just a few hundred years, we have moved from animal traction to space exploration, and from physical displacement communication (via the postal service) to Skype © and the mobile phone. The pace of technological evolution of commercial products is very telling. Devices and media for recording and listening to music are typical examples. As can be seen in the figure below, they have changed quickly and significantly since their inception just under a century and a half ago.

A century is as short as the duration of a flash at the geological scale. Similar findings can be made for the evolution of other devices: telephone (from the telephone to the smart phone), television (from the CRT screen to the digital screen HD), computers (gigantic first search computers to MacBook Air ©), lighting (from the oil lamp to the LED bulb), etc. The technology is evolving rapidly and the commercial products that come from it follow the same trend, each brand launching methodically and regularly new versions of its products or more simply new products. Each technological and technological innovation does not wait for the other and floods the stores, which is a temptation for greedy consumers that we are and an excellent economic route for manufacturers and traders.

Not only does this techno-industrial evolution stimulate the spontaneous tendency and the natural satisfaction that human beings have to consume, but it also forces them to buy new products, obliged to update their old systems that become obsolete, unsuitable, incompatible or simply can not be repaired. And that is not to mention the short or voluntarily limited life of material goods (problem of planned obsolescence), scandalous ineptitude. In the same vein, it appears that the consumables that allow the operation of some devices are sometimes more expensive than the device itself, as a result of which individuals are inclined to get a new one. In the same way, repairs cost most of the time more than buying a new device. If we add to this deplorable portrait the fact that the objects, mostly of an industrial nature, have no more sentimental value in the eyes of their bearers, that they do not take any more care of them or that they are weary quickly, we get a perfect cocktail for a frenzied consumption, ecologically unsustainable of course, but also economically incoherent.
