Since the world is a world, humanity is waging war. What are
history books if not a series of dates of battles and conquests? From simple
prehistoric clan wars to modern nuclear weapons, there is one constant: man's
inability to get along with his fellow man.
What does not help is that the man himself is an ambivalence. For
example, it organizes peace marches that turn violent; we see the proponents of
the pro-life movement hold speeches that are sometimes so virulent that we
believe they want to put to death the proponents of abortion and the death
penalty. In short, we want peace, but we are ready to fight to the death to
obtain it.
How is it that in the 21st century, science has evolved to the
point of sending probes to Mars but we still do not understand the A-B-C of
human behavior? Should humanity be doomed to self-destruct?
The other day I was watching a TV report about the history of
humanity. It explained that the arrival of man on earth is a recent phenomenon
in relation to the age of the planet. To illustrate this idea, we had spread
the history of the world on a scale of one year: January 1 represented the
birth of the earth and December 31, our current century. On this twelve-month
scale, the arrival of the man was very late, that is to say at the very end of
November. So, for most of its history, the land and its people had lived in
perfect harmony. And then suddenly, the man had appeared. And in less time than
it takes to say, he managed to annihilate millions of animal and plant species,
to pollute the air and the water, to shave the forests and to bleed the rocks
of their minerals . And now he was getting ready to annihilate himself.
Like many people, I say to myself: is this really our fate or is
there a solution that escapes us? And if it exists, this solution, why have not
we found it yet? And then how can we hope to establish peace between nations
when we can not even get along with members of the same family, between
neighbors or even within a couple?
If one is female, it is dangerously tempting to blame all the evils
of society on the male of the species. I admit that my eternal feminine
sometimes fantasizes by imagining a sci-fi scenario, that is to say a world
where the testosterone level would be controlled so that our men behave like
lambs
. But then, what would we do with men effeminate, without muscles and
without stomach? We women have been used to better than that, have not we? We
like our men to stand up. We want pink men, not wimps.
No, wanting to change men is not the solution, any more than
wanting to replace patriarchy with matriarchy. There is no evidence that women
alone would manage the planet better than their companions. It would be
different, certainly. But better?
I hear you cringe, dear sisters, and I explain myself. Let's not
forget that we women are fighting hard for us too; not in the same way as men
but just as violently. We are masters in the art of manipulating. We mutilate
each other with nasty words, words capable of mortally wounding self-esteem. We
cunning, we invite ourselves with a smile, we make cowards. In short, we are
not angels. That said, statistics show that we do not have the easy trigger
like our men - murderers, serial killers and dictators accused of crimes
against humanity are rarely women. And it is perhaps in this respect that the
salvation of the species is found.
To avoid the automatic recourse to weapons as soon as a conflict is
announced, it would therefore be necessary for the voice of women to temper the
martial spirit. For that, it would first be necessary to arrive at a balance
between the sexes. We should give the runner a chance and consider a world that
attaches so much importance to feminine and masculine values. A world where
history books would not only talk about killing, but also collaboration,
ecology and veneration for what lives.
Imagine if there were as many women as men in the UN and in all the
parliaments of the world, perhaps we would be entitled to a better quality of
life and would we reach viable consensus to settle our disputes?
Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go before arriving there.
The most advanced nations from the point of view of gender equality are still a
minority. Even women who hold power in so-called evolved countries still have
to behave like men to be respected.
No, there is no quick fix in the short term. But I am convinced
that a better distribution of power would contribute to a healthy balance and
greatly improve our chances of survival.
Give peace a chance, said John Lennon. We must strive for peace, of
course, but we must do it together. If history proves one thing, it is that
left to themselves, our men have not yet arrived to establish a lasting peace.
