Time management: the importance of personal time
It's the time you lost for your rose that makes your rose important. The little Prince
Do you work in an office, a factory, a hospital, a teaching house, on your own, at home or elsewhere? No matter where you are, you are likely to find yourself drained at the end of a day, sometimes with the annoying feeling of not doing anything worthwhile or having been tirelessly busy extinguishing fires.
You have been torn between the phones to do, the emails to answer, the appointments, the work that accumulates, the transport that never ends, besides, for many of you, the multiple requirements of family life, commissions, housework, and so on. And in the evening, you just have enough energy to crush you in front of the TV and to skip from one channel to another until you go to bed. Where is the personal time in all this time that would allow you to recharge your batteries and better meet the challenges that await you?
Do you have that, personal time?
Of course, you can not always decide alone how you will invest your time. Many constraints dictate your time management. But would not there be room for personal choices? Do you fail to put on the same level the tasks that count and those that count less, then missing time and postponing a tete-a-tete, a reading, a trip, a book project? , a "meeting on the pillow", an evening with friends, a show, a hobby, a dream, what do I know yet?
As a result, your stress increases, you tap into your energy reserves, dissatisfaction accumulates, bad mood sets in, digestive problems and sleep disorders appear and ... life goes on. But up to a point, the control of time is in our hands. A brief overview of our schedule is often enough to make us realize that our lives are filled with false emergencies that distract us from the essentials.
The three times
In general, our average day's wake can be divided into three types of activities:
1. The first includes all the energy we have to spend to earn our bread, to "survive" and to provide us with some comfort. Depending on whether we occupied our full-time or part-time job, we spend between one-quarter and one-half of our psychic energy on this type of productive activity.
2. Next, we engage about a quarter of our time in subsistence activities (eating, resting, washing, etc.) and housekeeping (cleaning, cooking, shopping, etc.).
3. The remaining time, about another quarter, is personal time, time we can spend on personal development, learning, creating, and so on. In our society, however, this free time is mostly occupied by the consumption of the media, television, computer (tablet, laptop) and reading newspapers and magazines. What remains, between four and twelve hours a week, is used more actively in hobbies, music, sports, exercise, cinema and restaurant.
In summary, then, our life is made of the experiences we derive from our working time, subsistence and maintenance activities and all that we do in our free time. Hence the importance of using our personal time so that our life resembles, as the philosopher said, a work of art.
For a long time, specialists have been interested in time management and it seems pertinent to bring together here some of their key ideas to help us better enjoy life.
What do you expect from life?
It's proven, and I come back to it often, success comes to those who know what they want. By determining what we want, generally first - like for example I want to be happy - and more specific then - What makes me happy in different areas of my life? -, we are taking a big step. Not only does this give meaning to our existence, but it allows us to better occupy our time because we then have guidelines for evaluating whether we are investing our time in the right place.
For a complete approach to find the important areas of your life and give yourself stimulating goals in each of them, I refer you to our book Dare to Change: Setting the course for your dreams. But you can already do this little exercise.
1- Write down everything that you feel is important to do in the coming year, without restriction and without evaluating it. For example: cooking again, going back to school, moving out, learning a foreign language, making the wine route, walking on the Camino de Santiago, changing jobs, etc. Be specific and concrete. Your list may be long and will include many more elements than you are able to achieve. Never mind ! You will resolve these conflicts in the next step.

2- Prune according to your values.
It's a safe bet that when we die, very few of us will remember with pleasure the long hours spent listening to television or surfing the Internet. We will rather regret not having occupied our time to do fulfilling things. Hence the importance today of looking at our values.
It is difficult for many of us to make a decision, especially when we face conflicting needs. By becoming aware of what is currently most important to you (what you value the most), it will be easier for you to set priorities, because you will have in mind a tool to measure the relative importance of your goals. So here's what to do with your list: Start by eliminating confused or unrealistic goals or whose achievement does not depend on you. Then, select three major goals by giving them A1, A2 and A3. This enumeration is obviously not fixed in cement, any more than life, and you will probably have to revise it periodically, to take into account your changing reality. But by identifying what's most important in your life right now, you'll be able to move on to the next step more easily.
3- Become aware.
At different times of the day, when you have free time, ask yourself: what is the best way to occupy my time right now? If you say it's doing what you're doing, go on. Otherwise, you have a decision to make: waste your time or get on the move to complete an activity related to your priorities (A1, A2, A3).
Perfectionism and time management
Because of the workload that has often increased, many people have to change their rules about performing certain activities at work. I have often heard perfectionists tell me they can not do things as perfectly as before. These amateurs of perfection are artists, in my opinion, but if they do not change their criteria, if they do not let go, they organize to be unhappy like the stones of the road.
It's the same with our personal time. How many people started writing a poem, a novel, a song and gave up after rewriting the first sentence twenty times? Evaluate areas of your life where it is important to be a little more demanding and those where it is less important. Folding a sheet or doing housework should require less than writing a resume for a job, if you understand what I mean.
Waste one's time ? Good yes

In closing, do not feel guilty if you can not manage your time perfectly. First, because guilt is useless. You have made a choice, assume it and move on without justifying yourself. In addition, time management is only a means, not a goal. The goal is not to manage your time perfectly,
