A paradox desire / happiness

Concerning (2), the search for happiness seems to meet a paradox. On one side, the desire is said:

insatiable, endless

source of trouble

and permanent in humans

On the other hand, happiness is presented as:

fulfillment of all desires

disappearance of disorders related to desire

So either the man desires, and he is not happy, or he is happy, and he no longer desires. Happiness goes with the fulfillment of all desires: it is a state where man is free from desire. However, nothing assures that such a state is possible. In the absence of seeing some men cease to desire, happiness can be dismissed as a fictional ideal.

This situation leads some philosophers to think differently about the notion. Happiness could be the simple absence of disorder (ataraxia). Without seeking to fulfill one's desires, one could seek to be no longer troubled by them.

In another register, Hobbes proposes an original vision of happiness. To be happy is to constantly pursue desires that are all realized (Elements of Law). Trouble and happiness are then compatible.

But whatever solution is proposed, we give up the classic definition. Happiness then becomes, if it is not possible, less paradoxical.
