Saladin
Born in Tikrit (Iraq) in 1138;
Death in Damascus (Syria) on 04/03/1193
Saladin, vizier of Egypt from 1169
to 1193, is one of the heroes of the Arab world in the Middle Ages. The holy
war he waged against the Crusaders to restore Jerusalem to Muslims is the
climax of his reign.
Coming from a Kurdish family,
Saladin is the son of Ayyub, governor of Tikrit. When his father died in 1164,
his brother Shirkuh was commissioned to support the Egyptian vizier, Shawar, at
war with the Fatimid caliph. Saladin accompanies his uncle in this campaign.
Yet, in 1169, Shirkûh's troops assassinated Shāwar. Shirkuh is named in his
place by the Fatimid caliph, but he dies a few months later. Saladin succeeds
him. Thus vizier of Egypt, he asserts his power by installing on his land most
of the members of his family.
He eliminated in 1171 the Fatimid
caliph, reigning as sole ruler over Egypt. It extends its territory to Syria in
1174, and has no difficulty in gaining other lands: in 1180, it reigns over an
empire that extends from Syria and northern Iraq, to Libya and the west of the Arabian Peninsula.
Named Sultan of the Ayyubid
dynasty, he became the unifying force of the Muslims, and undertook a unifying
project: the jihad (Muslim counter-crusade) against the Franks settled in
Palestine since the crusade of 1099. After the victory of Hattîn, in 1187
Saladin recovers Jerusalem, in the name of Islam, certainly, but also for
strategic reasons, his kingdom thus regaining unity.
After his death in Damascus in
1193, his brother Melik el-Adil succeeded him at the head of the empire.
