Why we are addicted to happiness or rather studies on happiness
For ten years, the analyzes of this concept in psychology, economics and social sciences have been gaining increasing interest from the public and political decision-makers.

In the past decade, there has been growing interest in the research on happiness in psychology, economics and social sciences by the public and policy makers. From this point of view, the last months and years have been rich in reports and books of all kinds, such as the two world reports published in 2012 and the end of 2013 by Columbia University, the United Nations General Assembly resolution of 2012 which establishes an international day of happiness, the OECD report on the measurement of subjective well-being as well as many books.
This does not mean that the theme of happiness is new. On the contrary. Throughout history, men have questioned what happiness was, what made them happy, and why it was so.
Since antiquity, Greek philosophers have identified two forms of happiness. Happiness can be conceived either as a mental state (hedonia) resulting from the presence of positive sensations (pleasure) or the absence of negative sensations (pain), or as the development of faculties specific to humans, in particular those under from the upper part of the soul, that is, intellectual.
Since then, research has fluctuated between these two poles, hedonic pleasure and daïmonic fulfillment, but not limited to it (for example, the psychological concept of subjective well-being includes the hedonic dimension, but also satisfaction with life, which is evaluated by asking the question directly to individuals) [1].
The innovative nature of happiness research is no more in the Easterlin paradox, which has been discussed since the 1970s, which claims that, although ever richer, industrial societies have been stagnating for decades. self-reported (that is, when individuals are asked to rate their level of happiness or satisfaction).
The adage "money does not make happiness" recalls the banality of this paradox. We all have the intuition that our satisfaction does not sum up to our paycheck or material success. In this sense, the paradox of Easterlin only confirms an idea that is familiar to us.
The novelty of happiness
Where is the originality of the research on happiness? Why does she talk about her? There are several reasons for this success.
The main one is that we have access for the first time to tangible evidence of the absence of strong causality between material well-being and psychological well-being. Even with skepticism, we need to recognize that we have concrete elements that can inform useful discussions, validations, refutations or amendments on the subject.

Another more obvious reason is the importance we all give to happiness in our personal lives. In one form or another, we all seek to be happy. There are many life projects based on melancholy or psychological suffering, but for most of us, happiness is unavoidable.
