hill overlooking the old city of Cairo. A fortified complex was built in the
12th century by King Saladin and his brother, King El-Addel to protect Cairo
from being invaded.
Today,
the Citadel is one of the most memorable attractions in this city filled with
unforgettable tourist treasures. You can visit the citadel of Saladin both day
and evening.
Historically,
this citadel of Egypt has, unsurprisingly, seen a lot of action. It was the
target of several invaders, especially during the birth of Cairo, which was
considered a city vulnerable to attack. However, the fortress ingeniously
located, was able to repel the most difficult attacks to remain solid over
time. To understand the importance of the Citadel of Saladin was to assume, you
only have to look at how the government of the country used it as a seat of
power during the nineteenth century.
However,
this does not mean that the Citadel of Saladin has remained the same during the
past centuries. Far from there, in fact there were many other fortress cities
like Alcazar of Seville and its different structures. An example of this was
found in the south of the Citadel of Saladin, where its enclosures were
designed to hold a harem in the 14th century and the courtyard, which was built
at the request of Chief Al-Nasir Muhammed, to display a mentality and a
different aesthetic of the old buildings that surrounded them.
