The "sport" educational
model?
in England, Eric Cantona attacks a
spectator during a match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace; in
France a rugby player complains because an opponent, in a closed scrum, tore
off an ear with his teeth; in Italy, a Milan AC fan stabs a Genius team tifosi
during a football match ... (this is the sixth murder of a fan on an Italian
football stadium since 1979). Aggressors and victims are all between the ages
of nineteen and thirty. And everyone can extend the list of violence,
aggression and misconduct to "sportsmanship" which is said to be made
of loyalty and respect of the opponent.
6The whimsical or temperamental
spirit of a player, the passion of a supporter for his team can neither
explain, nor minimize, nor especially to forgive these behaviors of thugs and
criminals who fall under public law. Athletes are not above the law. Neither
laws of sport nor those of the society in which they live. And obviously, the
two legislations do not agree. If Cantona had assaulted a person on public
roads, he would have been arrested and would have gone to prison. Moreover,
high-level athletes (who are professionals and must behave as such!) Should not
be models of fair play? And do not the unspeakable acts they engage in calling
for exemplary sanctions, should their careers be stopped?
Paradoxes of the massification of
sport
7The development of sports
practices, their place and the role they play in society offer contrasting, if
not contradictory, images. The relationships that sport has with violence in
stadiums and tribunes, with money and drugs or doping seem to deny any claim to
edify youth. The advocates of "pure sport" and "educational
sport" have been claiming for ages that sport has been misguided, that it
has become the prey of temple merchants, an issue of political, ideological and
social struggles. That is true. There was violence in and on the stadiums in
the twenties, brown amateurism finally favored in France the appearance and
"legalization" of professionalism from 1931-32; sportsmen cheated on
their sex in the thirties (the first "medical" controls were
introduced at the Berlin Games in 1936), and the doping did not appear with the
death of Simpson on the slopes of Ventoux ...
However, the number of sports
federations has steadily increased. Today, they bring together more than 13
million licenses, more than half of which are awarded to children and
adolescents under the age of 16. Other surveys indicate that 70% of French
people report engaging more or less regularly in a sporting activity. A growing
number of women and men are engaged in physical and sports activities. In
addition to the competitive sport model, there is a diversification of the
forms of sport and sport is no longer, as it did thirty years ago, the
privilege of young age.
9It is therefore difficult to say
that sport is devoid of any educational value: if more and more parents want
their children to practice one or more sports and to practice it themselves, it
is probably because they have become convinced that sport has formative virtues?
