Peace and non-violence

"We must learn to live together as brothers, otherwise we will perish together like fools" Martin Luther King. "A culture of non-violence and peace promotes respect for the life and dignity of every human being without prejudice or discrimination of any kind". "Education has a role to play in building a culture of non-violence and peace, especially by teaching children the practice of non-violence and peace, which will contribute to the realization of goals and principles set out in the United Nations Charter ".
Extracts from Resolution 53/243 on a culture of peace adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 September 1999.
The war
Since 1945, 150 armed conflicts have killed 23 million people, including 15 million civilians and an overwhelming majority of women and children.
Over the last decade, 2 million children have been killed, 6 million have been disabled, 10 million have lost their homes, over 1 million have been orphaned, and millions have been traumatized.
There are currently more than 20 conflicts in the world. Children are the direct victims of wars. They can lose their lives, stay disabled and traumatized. These injuries must be treated in the same way as bodily injuries to allow children to develop normally. Children are also indirect victims because the war destroys schools, hospitals, cultures. It separates families, starves people and causes disease.
It promotes prostitution and develops violence.
The peace
Peace is not the absence of war, nor the opposite of war. Defining peace as the absence of war reduces peace to a passive, incomplete and distant vision. The field of peace is much wider, because the field of violence is much larger than that of war.
The site "seed of peace" tries to address the reflection on the definition of these terms.

for a culture of non-violence and peace for the benefit of the world's children
In the eyes of Mahatma Gandhi, a great defender of peaceful resistance to oppression, "non-violence" was "the greatest force available to humanity, a force that holds more power than the most destructive that was conceived by the ingenuity of man.
In 1997, for the first time in history, all the living Nobel Peace Prize laureates appealed to all the Heads of State of the United Nations.
The goal was for the United Nations to proclaim a decade to promote a culture of non-violence to alleviate the suffering of the world's children. This call has been heard.
On November 10, 1998, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the first decade of the twenty-first century and the third millennium, the years 2001 to 2010 "International Decade to Promote a Culture of Non-Violence and Peace, for the Benefit children of the world ".
