Pollution and environment Article
published in Protection of the environment Pollution is the degradation of a
natural environment by external substances, introduced directly or indirectly.
Human health, the quality of ecosystems and aquatic or terrestrial biodiversity
can be affected and changed in a sustainable manner by pollution. Pollution is
considered when an ecosystem can not or no longer degrade the substances
introduced into its environment. The critical threshold of its ability to
naturally eliminate the substances is exceeded: the balance of the ecosystem is
broken. The sources of pollution are numerous and the identification of these
sources, the different pollutants and their effects on ecosystems is complex.
They can come from natural disasters or result from human activity, such as oil
spills, chemical pollution, nuclear accidents ... The nuisance caused by the
various sources of pollution are varied and can accumulate: increased mortality
human, animal or plant species that can lead to the extinction of the species,
destruction of the natural habitat, deterioration of the quality of the soil,
water, air ... Prevention of pollution, and the application of the
precautionary principle to all potential pollution from human activities is
systematic in the application of the principles of sustainable development.
This is of course to remedy existing pollution, but also to anticipate and
avoid sources of future pollution, in order to preserve the environment and public
health. In France, environmental damage is now punishable by law, and polluters
must pay compensation for environmental damage.
