The importance of storage in renewable energy production

The development of renewable energies has accelerated over the last decade under the impetus of public opinion proving the involvement and empowerment of everyone for these new technologies.

As we move in this direction, we are faced with complex new day-to-day technical challenges regarding truly sustainable energy production. Energy storage is an emerging technology that is playing an increasingly vital role in overcoming these challenges.
As the level of renewable energy produced and routed in the grid increases, utility companies now face the challenge of integrating this new intermittent energy supply with their traditional energy supply.

The problem of intermittent production of renewable energy

This unpredictability causes two distinct problems:

1. Many existing energy grid infrastructures are not able to absorb the influx of renewable energy during peak hours (eg in sunny / windy weather), resulting in losses. Renewable energy provided beyond the absorption capacity of the infrastructure is rejected. In order to optimize this new contribution, infrastructure upgrades representing a significant investment are needed.

2. When the level of renewable energy production is insufficient, suppliers must replace it with traditional energy, which can take time and generate additional costs.

The losses, combined with the additional costs of the investments to be made, make the integration of renewable energies complicated for utilities, leading to the search for solutions to overcome these constraints.

Energy storage solution:

Westnetz, the largest distribution grid operator in Germany (a subsidiary of RWE International), was facing these challenges in rural networks due to the increase in solar PV production on their grid, especially during the months of summer. Knowing that the reinforcement of the network infrastructure with new distribution lines and transformers would have required a huge investment of time and manpower, they looked for an alternative that would be effective until long-term improvements to the infrastructure can be undertaken.

Parker worked closely with Westnetz to provide a solution that met all the demands and constraints. The 250 kW energy storage system, consisting of a Parker 890PX series inverter coupled with LG Chem Lithium-Ion batteries, has a storage capacity of 1MWh, enabling LAN support during peak hours. This turnkey system was supplied in a 40-foot ISO shipping container, which can be moved to different areas of the power grid if needed. The system has allowed Westnetz to successfully store the excess energy generated during sunny periods and return it to the grid based on demand.
