It certainly has not escaped you if you are interested in a minimum of video games: the Battle Royale are everywhere. A fashion dominated by the two giants of the genre: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG, and Fortnite. The two games are quite close in the background, that is to say they invite a hundred players to land in an area, to arm and be the last survivor.
It is mainly in the form that the two hits stand out. When PUBG sports graphics that want to be realistic in a huge map to go by vehicle or on foot, Fortnite prefers a more cartoon style and offers the ability to destroy and build his environment at his leisure.
"It was me first! "
Argument often advanced by the pro-PUBG (the Battle Royale community is really split in two), it is the Korean game that arrived first. Indeed, PUBG was released in March 2017 in advance access and in December of the same year in full version. For its part, Fortnite's Battle Royale mode (the game also offers another mode) was released in September 2017 in early access and still has no final version.
Logically, at PUBG Corp, we did not see a good eye the exit of this competitor, especially as its free face the paying model of PUBG has greatly helped in its success. In a few weeks, the Fortnite student surpassed the master, helped by the success of the Twitch streamers, to become the most popular game of all genres.
According to the Korean Times, PUBG Corp said it was time, eight months after Fortnite started, to appeal to the courts. According to the Korean firm, the American competitor offers many concepts of PUBG, thus violating the copyright of its developers. It has therefore decided to file a complaint, only in South Korea for the moment, hoping to take advantage of a favorable court decision on its national territory against the American invader. Verdict in the coming weeks
This is not the first time that PUBG Corp complains about plagiarism regarding its favorite game since NetEase (Rules of Survival, Knives Out) has already paid the price.
PUBG did not invent everything
Certainly, Epic Games has probably developed Fortnite Battle Royale largely inspired by the great success of PUBG. However, the latter did not really invent the Battle Royale mode, as suggested by the statements of its developers. In 2016 already, H1Z1 landed with its format very close to a Battle Royale with zombies. Graphically but also mechanically, it reminds a lot PUBG while it came out the year before.
We also found this survival system, alone against zombies and other survivors, in the DayZ mode of Arma II, released in 2013. Even Minecraft, somewhere integrates elements of Battle Royale on parts survival in multiplayer, while it was released in 2011. In the end, each game brings its small originality, while taking over elements of existing games, because we can not reinvent the hot water every time. After all, who ever said that Call of Duty was a plagiarism of Doom or that Mario Power Tennis on Wii was a plagiarism of Pong?
