Here at Time Out, we can never resist a good fireworks show.

And this Bahrain National Day there’s set to be displays at three different locations across the Kingdom.

On December 15, the festivities will kick off at 7pm at Salman Bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort in Riffa, ahead of a second show at Salman Town in the Northern Governorate at 7.30pm.

 

Today’s Doodle honors Bahrain’s National Day, a two-day public holiday in celebration of the nation’s declaration of sovereignty in 1971. To mark the occasion, red and white lights are used to ornament everything from landmark buildings to the country’s famous palm trees.

Illustrated in the Doodle artwork is Bahrain’s red and white flag, which was formally adopted in 2002. The flag’s two-color design traces its origins back to the 1820 General Treaty of Peace with the U.K., when the flag’s white band was added to the existing red background to symbolize the harmonious relationship between the two countries.

When is Bahraini National Day?

This public holiday is always celebrated on 16 December. The holidays last for two day with 17 December also a public holiday.

The holidays mark former ruler, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa coming to the throne in 1961. 16 December is Bahrain's National Day.

History of Bahraini National Day

Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands. From the 1860's, Bahrain had been a British protectorate.

Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa was made the first emir of Bahrain from 1961 until his death. Born in Jasra, he became emir upon the death of his father, Salman ibn Hamad.

During his 38 year reign, Bahrain gained its independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1971 and Bahrain underwent an economic transformation into a modern nation and a key financial center in the Persian Gulf area.

At the age of 65, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa died of a heart attack on 6 March 1999 at the al Sakhir Palace in Manama shortly after his meeting with the United States defense secretary William Cohen. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

How is Bahraini National Day celebrated?

Celebrations include fireworks displays, cultural shows, contests, exhibitions and the announcement of new projects by the government.
