Prophet Mohamed

In the Muslim religion, the last prophet sent to earth was Mohammed (QSSL). His family belonged to the Hashemite clan which occupied a certain place in Mecca. Mohamed's father, Abdallah, died before his son was born. As for Amina, the mother, she too died prematurely, leaving her orphaned son. Born in Mecca in 570, Mohammed was raised by his grandfather and his uncle.

At the age of twenty-five, he married Khadidja, a merchant widow from his state. When he was forty years old (this age is also called "the age of reason", Mohamed has the immense surprise when he isolated himself in a cave in 611, to see the Angel Gabriel appear, came announced to him that he is the prophet of God.

-Gabriel said to him: Read.

-Mohammed answers: I cannot read.

-Gabriel repeats: Read.

-Mohammed repeats: I can't read.

Then the angel recites the first verses of the Quran: [Read in the name of your Lord who created 2 Who created man from a clot of blood. 3.Read! for your Lord, the Most Noble, 4.He is the one who taught by the pen, 5.He taught man what he did not know] (Quran, 96: 1-5.)

But, three years passed before further revelations were made to Muhammad. Following the new revelations, Mohamed reunites his family and friends to transmit the divine will to them. The first Muslims were born. The word of God begins to be spread. Unfortunately, persecutions against Muslims were not long in coming and all those claiming to be part of this new religion were ordered to leave Mecca.

In 622, Mohammed immigrated to the city of Medina. Seven years later, Mohammed returns to Mecca for a pilgrimage. It is the occasion in 630, to destroy the idols which surround the holy city.

In 632, the "farewell pilgrimage" takes place. In the plain of Arafat, the prophet gives his last great sermon in which he will once again say his wishes and those of God:

“Belief in one God without icons or other symbols; equality of believers without distinction of race or class, meaning other than individual superiority based on piety; protection of the life, property and honor of all beings; abolition of the loan at interest, abolition of blood feuds and private justice; better treatment of women, obligation to distribute the inheritance between close relatives of both sexes, excluding any possibility of accumulation of wealth in the hands of a small number: role, conferred on the Koran and on the behavior of the Prophet, of law and criterion in any question of human life ”.

A few weeks later, he died of illness.

For centuries, the Prophet Mohammed has aroused various interests, both intellectual and literary. In conclusion, here are some quotes and statements, little known in the Arab world, but which summarize quite well what Mohammed (QSSL) was and still is:

"Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, of a cult without images, founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of a spiritual empire, here is Muhammad! On all scales where the we measure human greatness, which man was greater? "

Lamartine

History of Turkey, Paris, 1854. Volume 1 and Book 1-p.280.

“He was Caesar and the Pope united in one being; but he was the Pope without having the pretensions of the Pope, and Caesar without having the legions of Caesar: without an army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, and without a fixed income; if there is a man who has the right to say that he reigns by divine will, it would be Muhammad, since he has all the power without having the instruments or the supports "

Bosworth smith

Mohammad and Mohammadanism. London, 1874; p. 92.

“Some readers may be surprised to see me place Muhammad at the top of the most influential people in the world, and others will likely challenge my choice. However, Muhammad is the only man in the world who has succeeded par excellence on both levels: religious and secular. "
