Burj Khalifa (Arabic: برج خليفة, Khalifa Tower) is a skyscraper located in Dubai, which in May 2008 became the tallest human structure ever built. Its final height, reached on January 17, 2009, is 828 meters1,2. It forms the heart of a new district: Downtown Dubai. The inauguration and partial opening took place on January 4, 2010.
Burj Khalifa is part of a large urban planning, real estate and architectural project covering an area of 2 km2. The idea is to create a new district, Downtown Dubai, a little south of historic Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and next to the coastal district of Jumeirah, but located a few kilometers inland. This district must include, in addition to the skyscraper of the same name, an artificial lake and many large buildings. In all, it provides for a set of 30,000 residences, nine hotels including The Address Downtown Burj Dubai completed in 2008, at least 19 residential towers, the largest shopping center in the world, the Dubai Mall which opened there in 2008, three hectares of parks and the artificial lake of twelve hectares (Burj Khalifa Lake). On the latter, the Dubai fountain offers an aquatic spectacle.
The tallest tower in the world
Developer Emaar, one of Dubai's two largest real estate companies, announced in February 2003 its intention to build the tallest tower in the world3.
Originally, the skyscraper was to be called "Burj Dubai". Like the eponymous real estate complex project, it was renamed Burj Khalifa when it was inaugurated on January 4, 2010 in honor of the Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyane, President of the United Arab Emirates. , after its refinancing to the tune of 10 billion US dollars of the Dubai projects, put in difficulty by the international financial crisis of 2008. This skyscraper was also to measure 560 meters high, but following the announcement of projects higher competitors, Emaar demanded that his project be redesigned to be the tallest in the world [ref. necessary].
The final version is 828 meters high and has 160 “habitable” floors 4. The architecture and engineering of the tower were designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago (SOM, see #Companies Involved, below). Adrian Smith was its chief architect and Bill Baker was its chief structural design engineer.
The tower was initially designed as a residential building: the decision to use the top floors for offices was taken late. It includes over 160 floors apartment floors, office floors and a luxury hotel from the brand new “Armani hotels” chain, a joint venture between Giorgio Armani SpA of Milan and Emaar Hotels & Resorts LLC, a subsidiary of promoter Emaar Properties. This hotel will have 175 rooms and suites, five restaurants and a spa over an area of 40,000 m2.
The total budget for the Burj Khalifa project is around 1.5 billion US dollars, or about 1 billion euros, compared to that of the overall urban complex which, in turn, stands at around 20 billion US dollars.
The tower can accommodate up to 35,000 people6. For an area of 517,240 m2 (i.e. 0.517 24 km2), we obtain a population density of 67,667 inhab./km2.
This should be exceeded 200 meters by the Jeddah Tower (formerly Kingdom Tower) of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia around 2025. Indeed, this tower should slightly exceed a kilometer in height. Which will make her the tallest in the world.
The tower is not only the tallest in the world, it also holds other records: the most floors, the highest floor occupied, the highest elevator in the world, etc.
