To stay in good health
The purpose of this lesson is to teach us how to be healthy and how to protect ourselves from disease.
Introduction
Our health is important because it makes it easier for us to achieve our goals in life. For this reason, we need to know what to do to stay healthy. Our health may not always be perfect, but the Lord expects us to have the best possible health.
The following story is about a common health problem that many families experience:
Marta Molina was only eight months old when she fell seriously ill. This beautiful little girl became so ill that she lost a lot of weight in a short time. She had a dry mouth, dull eyes, and her fontanel deepened. Not knowing what to do, her family followed primitive local customs to treat her, but these had no medical value (see Teaching Personal and Family Preparedness, Lesson 22, "Disease Prevention and Good Health").
Marta Molina, like many people around the world, had fallen ill for reasons her family did not understand. Therefore, she did not know how to avoid the disease or how to cure it. This is common. Ineffective and even harmful customs and rituals are often used to prevent or cure disease. Some of these uses have even caused serious complications.
Causes of illness
What causes illness?
Many years ago, people did not know what caused the disease. Some thought it was because they hadn't made the proper sacrifices. Others, that it was because of spells cast by enemies. Recently, scientists and doctors have learned the cause of most diseases. Much has been learned since the Restoration of the gospel in 1830. With the outpouring of the Spirit of the Lord on earth, many discoveries have been made that help us stay healthy.
Today, we know that the majority of illnesses are caused by microbes, which are tiny organisms that live all around us. They are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. Some microbes are carried in the air, others pass from person to person, and still others pass from animals and insects to humans. This is why we must do all we can to prevent insects and animals such as mice and rats from entering our home.
In addition, all animal and human waste must be properly disposed of. These contain a lot of harmful germs, especially if they come from a sick body. If left on the ground, flies, insects and rodents will be attracted. When these pests swarm on the waste, germs pass over their bodies. Then these beasts come into our home and rest on our food, kitchen utensils, or other items we touch. The germs deposited on all of this can make us sick.
Germs can cause many diseases when they enter our body. If we want to eliminate disease, then we must get rid of the germs that cause it (adapted from Teaching Personal and Family Preparedness, Lessons 23, “Causes of Infections Disease”, and 24, “Waste Disposal”).
How to prevent the spread of germs
Here are some ways to reduce or eliminate pathogens:
Regularly clean the house, especially areas where germs can grow.
Protect foods from insects and germs by covering them properly. Whenever possible, perishable foods should be refrigerated.
Wash food thoroughly to remove as many germs as possible.
Wash hands before eating and after using the toilet.
Brush your teeth after every meal to avoid cavities and other dental complications.
Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. This prevents the spread of germs.
Wear shoes, sandals or slippers so that the feet do not pick up germs on the surface of the ground.
Eat properly and rest. Eating nutritious foods and getting enough rest can prevent or overcome illness. Germs have a harder time contaminating a healthy organism.
By trying to stay healthy, we avoid or eliminate many diseases. We also set a good example for our children and thus help them develop good hygiene habits.
