Have you just discovered your passion for basketball? Terms like "goaltending" (against illegal), "return to the zone" or "shot clock" are surely unknown to you. This will change and you too will soon be able to put your two cents in the discussions in front of your television or in the room: let's go for an express training in the rules of basketball.

The basic rules of basketball: recap
A playing field, two teams, two baskets and a ball - the match can begin. Find out more about the essential conditions for a basketball game here.
Players
In basketball, ten players occupy the field, so five per team. Each team has the right to have up to seven substitutes who can be sent to the field as many times as necessary.
For the kick-off, the five players of a team (called the "starting five" - five majors) generally take the following positions: a pivot, two leaders and two backs but other constellations are also possible.

The shots
The goal of the game is simple: throw the ball into the opposing team's basket, a basket placed 3.05 m high at the edge of the shortest line delimiting the field. A free throw is worth one point, a normal shot two points. If the player throwing the ball is behind the three-point line, the basket is worth three points. At the end of the regular playing time, the team having scored the most points wins the match.

Game time
A FIBA match consists of four periods: quarter-times. Each period lasts 10 minutes, in the NBA a quarter-time lasts twelve minutes. In the event of a tie at the end of regulation time, extra time of five minutes each is played until one of the two teams wins.

THE RULES AND PROHIBITIONS ARE MULTIPLE IN BASKETBALL, FOR EXAMPLE CONCERNING THE BEHAVIOR OF PLAYERS DURING PHYSICAL CONTACT.
Fouls
In the field of basketball we remember four different kinds of faults:
• personal foul: illegal contact with an opponent (defensive foul, offensive foul)
• technical foul: non-compliance with certain rules and lack of discipline (eg non-compliance with a decision taken by a referee, provocation, too many players on the field)
• the flagrant or unsportsmanlike fault: fault committed with an exaggerated physical commitment, intentional and unnecessary
• the disqualifying foul: extreme unsportsmanlike foul, leading to the exclusion of the player (insults, brawl etc.)
Defensive foul
A defender can only try to repel an attacker to a certain extent. Holding, blocking, pushing, loading, tripping or blocking by extending the arms, elbows or legs, all of this is prohibited.
Offensive foul
An attacker in possession of the ball commits a fault if he comes into contact with a defender who is in a position of legal defense or who is retreating. Pushing the defender off with the forearms or making contact with the elbows are typical offensive fouls.
Professional players in a competitive match
ABUSIVE CONTACT IS FORBIDDEN: ATTACKERS AND DEFENDERS MUST FOLLOW CERTAIN RULES WHEN IN CONTACT WITH THE OPPONENT.
Penalties
Following a disqualifying foul or two unsportsmanlike fouls, the player is excluded from the match and must leave the room and wait for the end of the match in the locker rooms.
After five personal or technical faults, the player is excluded from the match in progress.

Time violations
Basketball is a varied discipline and is characterized by its fast play. This is mainly due to the fact that rules define the maximum time that an action can take.
The shot-clock: the rule of 24 seconds
A stopwatch displays the count of 24 seconds, the maximum time allowed for an offensive action. The timer is activated with each new possession of the ball by a team.
If the ball hits the opposing team's basket ring, the clock
