The cartoon1 is an animated film often declined in short film. This word originally designates each of the drawings that make up a cartoon film. And then, by extension, this word designates the film itself.
Regarding the graphic style and animation: very significant deformations of the characters (stretching, big eyes, four fingers, squash and stretch technique). This particularity of the characters is capital in the scenarios, because it allows them to experience all kinds of illogical and funny situations.
As regards the scenario: the exaggeration of the situations and the emotions expressed by the characters, the violence of these which are nevertheless never dramatized: the characters often resuscitate after having undergone situations which would have resulted in their death in normal times ; unlike the Disney style, which sometimes turns into tragedy (fairy tales, death of Bambi's mother).
The cartoon systematically favors humor.
In Who wants the skin of Roger Rabbit, it is about Toonville, the city of toons, but the cartoons generally do not attach much importance to the life of the characters: only the moment of the action and the elements count. leading to the end of the gag. So, toon humor lies more in the comedy of situations than in a complex story.
Often, toons are given anvils, pianos, clubs, and other unusual objects on their heads.
The law of the strongest is not legion in cartoons, and the traps that the characters set for each other often end in a comic fall, thanks to numerous twists and turns.
They are therefore generally short films, using irony, exaggeration, caricature and above all imagination.
Historical
The golden age of the cartoon is between the 1930s and the 1950s with companies like Warner Bros, MGM and Walt Disney Productions. The very first short films were therefore in black and white, often punctuated by jazz or blues, because the first characters (Bosko) are not very talkative. Around 1934, the first colors appear in the animations, the characters and the staging are diversified.
