Friday is a very important day for Muslims, because it is the one that brings them the most blessings. It is the day when Muslims gather for the midday prayer. Just before prayer, they listen to a sermon, delivered by an imam. This sermon provides them with important knowledge about God and Islam, in addition to sometimes being composed of advice to the community, warnings and even reprimands, but also encouragement to do good and support each other. , as a community. It is a day that God has designated as blessed and no other day of the week shares such virtues.
The whole life of the believer is a life of worship. And, although there are no particular places or times to worship God, there are times or days that God has made superior to others. Friday is one of them.
A hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) teaches us that “the best day in the sight of God is Friday, the day of congregation”. [1] Prayers in congregation (compulsory for men) are one of the most encouraged duties in Islam. It is a time when Muslims come together to worship God and to find strength and comfort by standing together, shoulder to shoulder,
“O you who believe! When you hear the call to prayer on Friday, hurry up and call on God and let go of any business dealings. This is much better for you, if you only knew! "(Quran 62: 9)
In most Muslim-majority countries, Friday is a public holiday and is sometimes combined with Thursday or Saturday to form a weekend. However, there is no compulsory closure of shops, except during the noon prayer. In Western countries, working Muslims manage to take their lunch break at prayer time, early in the afternoon.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) said to his devotees: “The five daily prayers and the Friday prayer serve as atonement for any sin committed between these prayers, provided they do not commit of major sins. "[2]
It is important that a Muslim does not neglect Friday prayer because of his job, his studies, or any other reason relating to things on this earth. The believer must make it a priority, because missing it three times in a row, without a valid reason, will push him astray.
While it is only men who are obliged to attend the Friday congregational prayer there are also many recommended acts that can be performed by men, women or children during this day. These acts include, taking a bath and wearing clean clothes, saying numerous supplications to God, sending blessings upon Prophet Muhammad, and reading Chapter 18 of the Quran, which is entitled ‘The Cave’.
Although only men are required to attend Friday prayers at the mosque, there are also several other acts of worship recommended for everyone on this particular day, whether they are men, women or children. It is good, for example, to take a full bath and wear clean clothes (which in no way means that you should not wash and wear clean clothes on other days of the week), to call upon God abundantly , to pray for the blessings of God on Muhammad and to read sura 18 of the Koran, entitled “The cave”.
