–Traditional clothing of the United Arab Emirates
Generally, when we talk about the Emirates in France, we imagine turbaned people who make their wives wear the burka. Cliché!
Already, the turban is of Asian origin. Originally worn by the Persians (the Iranians), it spread to the Ottomans (the Turks) and is still worn today in parts of India and Pakistan. If they wore it at one time, the Arabs of the peninsula do not wear it today.
The burka, or burqa (this full veil with a mesh for the eyes), is Afghan, and the Emiraties do not wear either.
So how do Emirati dress?
The way of dressing Emiratis is typical of Arab countries. Inherited from the predominant Bedouin culture in the Arabian Peninsula, the men and women of today perpetuate ancestral traditions through the way they dress.
Men and women wear "veils" and "dresses" with long sleeves.
When you arrive in the Arabian Peninsula, you quickly understand why; you have to be able to protect yourself from the sun and the sand, and it is very hot. In summer, the more covered we are, the better we are; it is therefore the most suitable garment (except the abaya, whose black color quickly makes it hot in the sun).
For information on how to dress as an expat in the UAE, read the article: Behavior in UAE.
The women
They wear the abaya, this long black dress, and a hijab (the scarf that covers the neck and part of the hair). They sometimes add the niqab, which covers the mouth and forehead so that only the eyes are visible, or else pull their hijab down in front of their face, so that we absolutely cannot see their face. (Pictured right, women wearing Emirati abaya and hijab)
The abaya is traditionally all-black, but many abayas today have brightly colored embroidery and patterns on the collar and sleeves. Likewise, young people like to wear abayas that are cinched at the waist, while this dress is traditionally cut straight so as not to show off the shapes.
All the women are all black, which is not the best color for hot weather, which is part of the reason why the air conditioning is so strong in public places.
They wear very fashionable clothes underneath their abaya, which they hasten to take off when they are between women or at home.
Another manifestation of this very pronounced taste for fashion, Emirati women buy abayas made by great couturiers, such as Dior, Pierre Cardin, Channel ...
Men
Men wear the dishdash, or dish-dasha, sometimes also called gandoora, gandourah or tawb outaoub (the long white robe) and the keffiyeh (scarf). (In the photo, two Emiratis dressed in the traditional way)
The traditional keffiyeh of the United Arab Emirates is white and held by the agal (sometimes in the plural aghals), those kinds of black and fairly heavy pipes that hold the keffiyeh in place. The keffiyeh of neighboring countries is not necessarily white, and each Bedouin tribe traditionally had its own color of keffiyeh.
Young Emiratis, however, prefer red and white keffiyehs, like the one Yasser Arafat wore, and tie it around their head to avoid having to wear agal.
As for women, the dishdash and keffiyeh of the Emiratis are often made by great French, English or Italian designers.
To put on your keffiyeh in the Emirati way, just fold the square of fabric diagonally (in a triangle), and place it on your head, the two angles of the larger side of the triangle to the right and to the left. . Then add the aghals, leaving the long black tail hanging out behind the back.
To tie your keffiyeh without using the aghals, fold it into a triangle, put it on your head, then wrap the two corners on the right and left around your head. Finally, wedge the end between your head and what you have already rolled up. Do not use aghal in this configuration.
All Emiratis, from 5 to 6 years old to the oldest, both men and women, wear traditional dress.
European clothing
The Emiratis hardly wear Western clothes, at least in the street.
They usually wear it under their abaya or dishdash. When they go to nightclubs or parties, even in the Emirates, they adopt jeans and tight T-shirts, both men and women. Few do yet (nightclubs are often associated with alcohol and debauchery in the spirits), but there are more and more of them, especially in Dubai.
And when they come to Europe, so as not to be stared at like curious animals, they dress in European style, both men and women. And since they are rich, they love the clothes of the big European brands
