What are the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies?

 

Advantages :

 

predictability: due to the operation of the technological tool, the procedures for starting, "navigating" the device, etc., are identical;

the visual channel: the preferred channel for people with autism;

no direct relationship with a person: this is appreciated by people with autism who have difficulty in contacting others during an interaction (especially taking into account non-verbal information such as gestures, gaze, etc.)

it is attractive to some, and therefore motivating;

learning can be understood from another angle;

the accomplishment of the task is done at the pace of the person;

the tools are transportable and easy to handle (tablets, smartphones, voice synthesis, etc.);

improving independence.

Disadvantages:

 

the cost of devices;

the social withdrawal that can be generated during heavy use;

difficulties in managing interruptions (stopping activity with the tool, possible computer malfunction);

difficulties in dealing with the loss of the device in the event of damage;

sleep problems that can be caused by the particular brightness of tablets and other tools with screens ("blue light"). Used shortly before bedtime, they can affect the quality of sleep and therefore learning.
