The importance of water
Water is one of the most important things on earth. Every living thing needs water for its survival. Without water, plants, animals, everything would perish. Our bodies are made up of about 75% water. So we literally walk with bags of water. Water allows our blood to flow through the blood vessels, providing the body with essential nutrients. Water also helps flush waste out of the body through the excretory system. Our need for water becomes very apparent when we are thirsty. The taste of water flowing down our throat is something we take so much pleasure in. We drink glasses of this precious transparent liquid every day. It is vital for our life.
Importance of water in history
The earliest human civilizations began near rivers. The Nile, the Tigris and the Euphrates were places where man began to settle on the earth. In all parts of the world, major rivers have played an important role in the evolution of man.
Water is used for drinking, bathing, cleaning, and just about anything we like to do. Without water, life is virtually impossible.
Geographic importance of water
world map Water covers about two-thirds of the earth's total surface. The vast expanses of seas and oceans have long been our primary source of food and travel route. Millions of fish live in the sea. They provide an abundant supply of food.
Rivers, seas and oceans provide humans with important means of transportation. In ancient times, man explored the land by sea. The British, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and others all reached the less developed world from their ships. They conquered or colonized what they discovered. Much of who we are today is influenced by the travelers who came by sea in their ships.
Today, the world's waterways are still of major importance to humanity. Huge tankers, container ships and others navigate these routes. In fact, many shipping routes are overcrowded.
Water to maintain life
When there is water scarcity, for example during a drought, we know how terrible the consequences can be. Plants, animals and human beings perish. The affected land becomes parched and dry. Nothing grows. In the middle of the Sahara Desert where there is very little rain, there is also very little life.
People who live near or around deserts know the value of water. They know how precious it is and they take great care in using it. We who live in a land with plenty of water don't think about being in the shower for half an hour. Those who live in arid areas do not have such luxury. They can't afford to waste water like we do.
As long as there is life on this planet, water will be present. Without it, life as we know it is impossible. So it is important for us to know how precious water is. We should not waste it or pollute it by any means. Water is just too precious.
