Diego Maradona

More than a particularly winning player, Maradona was a revolutionary player.

Former Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of 60.

The Argentine star died of a cardiopulmonary arrest at his home in Buenos Aires, his lawyer confirmed to the local press.

The football legend - who won the 1986 World Cup with the Argentina team - had recently undergone surgery for a brain hematoma and was on the mend.

Linea

Maradona may have been the greatest football player in his country's history, but he was much more than that.

Some, for example, regarded him as a god; others like a devil.

But he wasn't just a footballer: he was a successful TV presenter, a controversial football coach and manager, a scathing commentator in the internet age, a central protagonist in global entertainment, a political activist and an example for millions of people around the world.

Likewise, he was a hypermedia figure who had fallen out of favor because of scandals, drug addiction, and his sympathy for controversial leaders.

Maradona

Maradona was born into a modest family

Modest origins

Maradona was born on October 30, 1960 in Villa Fiorito, a small, poor town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the fifth in a family of eight siblings who depended on his father's work as a boatman.

Like his life, Maradona's football triumphs had an epic degree that made him a hero for two closely related and intensely passionate peoples: Argentina and Naples.

By representing these two peoples, Maradona exposed to the world not only a gifted left-hander, perhaps unique, but also a charisma to materialize the historical claims of the populations identified with defeat and exclusion.

This is how the "Pibe de Oro", the "Pelusa", the "Cosmic Kite", became "D10S".
