English physician, founder of endocrinology
Thomas Addison is usually considered one of the "great men" of Guy's Hospital in London.
Born in October 1795 at Long Benton, Northumberland, near Newcastle, he was the son of Sarah and Joseph Addison, grocer and florist in that locality. He first went to the village school and then to the Royal Free Grammar School in Newcastle-on-Tyne, where he learned the Latin he spoke fluently...
His father wanted him to be a lawyer, but in 1812 he entered the University of Edinburgh as a medical student. In August 1815, he obtained his doctorate with the subject of the thesis: "Dissertatio medica inauguralis quaedam de syphilide et hydrargyro complectens" - Subject on Syphilis and Mecure. The same year, he was a surgeon at Lock Hospital in London. Then he became interested in skin diseases, a subject he would favor throughout his life. He was the first to describe pigmentation changes in the disease that would bear his name.
Addison's brilliant medical and scientific career began in 1817 when he was engaged as a ward at Guy's Hospital in London.
On January 14, 1824 he was promoted to assistant. Thomas AddisonIn 1827 he was a lecturer in medicine. From 1837 Addison practiced medicine full time at Guy's Hospital in London, associated with Richard Bright, with whom he wrote the treatise: "Elements of the Practice of Medicine" (1839). After Bright's retirement in 1840, Addison retained the lectureship alone until 1854.
In 1849 he made the first descriptions of the two diseases which would bear his name and in 1855 he wrote the monograph "On the Constitutional and Local Effects of Disease of the Suprarenal Capsules".
Addison was a brilliant teacher and practitioner but rather shy, taciturn and reserved. He was one of the most respected doctors at Guy's Hospital where he had enormous influence, he taught dogmatically and energetically, devoting himself completely to his students and patients.
He is famous for having described at the same time as Brown-Séquard the relationship between the disease that bears his name and the dysfunction of the adrenal glands as well as for the description of pernicious anemia.
Addison suffered from numerous episodes of severe depression. He retired in 1860 following a new bout of depression with cerebral disorder. He wrote to his students to thank them.
Three months later, on June 29, 1860, in Brighton, Addison ended his life by defenestration.

Addison's disease: description
Addison's disease is a rare disease caused by damage to the adrenal cortex leading to a total deficit in aldosterone and cortisol. Thomas Addison described his first cases of slow adrenal insufficiency by bilateral destruction of the adrenals. In the past, the disease was mainly due to tuberculosis. At present, the frequency of autoimmune attacks (antibodies produced by the immune system attack the adrenal glands) is underlined, all the more interesting in that they can be integrated into a broader framework of polyglandular disease ( thyroid - ovary - pancreas) with enzymatic deficits in the metabolism of long-chain fatty acids.
