What is "human" values?

Human values are the human qualities that have value for each of us, even for very young children. It is the virtues that guide us to take humanity into account when we interact with another human being and thus create the bond with others by touching the humanity of the other from our own humanity. These are the different positive dispositions that have value to us as human beings. They are the foundation of all viable lives in society: they create a space for a dynamic, a movement towards the other, which leads to peace.

It is through human values that it is possible to develop relationships with others, to work with others in cooperation, to dialogue together and to resolve conflicts. These are our different positive feelings based on our human feelings for the human essence of the other. The work of Seeds of Peace aims at valuing human values as a tool for managing human relations and therefore as an inspiration for peace.

These human values are numerous and can be declined in many ways. They include respect, acceptance, recognition, consideration, listening, openness, cooperation, good citizenship, honesty, fairness, sharing, brotherhood and empathy towards of other humans. It is with these human values that it becomes truly possible to put into practice its moral values, such as justice, integrity and the rejection of violence. By developing these human values, we can live together in harmony and personally contribute to peace.

Faced with the rise of incivility and violence, the action of Seeds of Peace is to highlight these human values and above all to show that it is possible to apply them in his daily life. Thus, human ties between people, including different religions or cultures, can be created.

What is the difference between "human" values, "ethical" values and "moral" values?

By "human" values, we mean the values that allow us to live and show our humanity, ie our feelings of respect, consideration, appreciation and empathy for other humans.

The so-called "ethical" values are those which give us a behavior that respects others, that is to say, other humans, and does not harm them. The respect of the animal and vegetable kingdoms can also be part of it.

The "moral" values are the laws, the external injunctions - and the rules, either our religion prescribes us, or that we give ourselves personally - that enact those behaviors of respect for others, their physical and mental integrity, and of his life. They evoke the same thing as the so-called ethical values, but today, "moralizing" discourse is badly perceived. Ethical values and even more human values are perceived much more positively, perhaps because one feels oneself concerned. We strongly desire that the others be "human" with us.

Moral values, without feeling for the one in front of us, are difficult to apply. Our human values help us to apply them. Indeed, it is much more difficult to harm a person or a group if one feels their humanity from our own humanity.

These human and moral values are universal values, both felt in our inner being (our conscience), and expressed in laws, constitutions, as well as in numerous international texts (Declarations, Conventions, etc.) affirming the Rights humans. The recognition of these universal values by many countries of the world is the first step towards their application, calling for their respect by all and by all. These texts aim above all to guarantee the integrity (both physical and psychological) of each human being, precisely because he is human: everyone has the right not to be abused, in any form whatsoever. But the ultimate goal is to promote a positive and concrete practice (attitudes, behaviors and deeds) that embody these universal human values as the basis of human relations in a spirit of reciprocity and mutual respect for human beings.
