The Benefits of Circumcision

Since the beginning of time, circumcision has been a ritual practice common to the Muslim and Hebrew religions. In Morocco, boys are circumcised between the ages of 5 and 7 years. The Jewish baby is from the age of 8 days. The operation consists in excising the foreskin covering the glans. It is so no bacteria can nest in the folds of a non-existent skin. The ideal idea received that hygiene is easier when the foreskin is removed. This is the reason why this ablation is practiced on a large majority of children in the United States of America.

Circumcision has become a surgical practice practiced anywhere in the world regardless of the beliefs and thus acting without conviction or religious motivation. Circumcision has proved to be hygienic, aesthetic or even prophylactic. However, the uncircumcised are subject to germs responsible to microbes which preferentially domicile between the glans and the foreskin. Because of the growth of the penis, pediatricians advocate that boys have reached the age of 5 years, as it may happen that the foreskin naturally relaxes by recommending that local anesthesia be performed in order to excise without pain. Obviously, circumcision is a very old Islamic custom.

The Berber babies were circumcised at the barbers, by falling the foreskin under sharp scissors. This operation designated by the Berbers by "Tazalite" which means "Islamist" is a reflection of Moroccan reality. In my eyes, it goes without saying that I am against the excision of girls, which is a cruel operation and devoid of any modest sense; so much so that excision in Arab countries, is formally prohibited in accordance with the wishes of the Muslims.

Advantages

According to the studies mentioned above, the main medical benefits of circumcision would be:

- An American study has shown that circumcision would reduce the likelihood for men to be infected with HPV by almost 60% and protect men from herpes and human papillomavirus.

- An African study has shown that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting AIDS. The cells of the foreskin are indeed sensitive to HIV. This study was conducted on a large sample of the population in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa. Successful results have led WHO to include adult male circumcision as part of its program to prevent the spread of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. However, circumcision is not a valid protection against AIDS.

- Circumcision would decrease the risk of urinary infections in infants by about 12 times. However, 0.7% of babies are hospitalized in their first year because of a urinary tract infection.

- Circumcision slightly decreases the risk of cancer of the penis, a form of cancer however extremely rare.

- Thickening of the cutaneous coating of the glans following circumcision would reduce the problems of premature ejaculation, even if this disorder results more from psychological than physiological causes.
