Road accidents
causes and consequences and solutions
Road accidents
A road accident is
an accident occurring on the road network between a rolling vehicle
(automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.) and any other thing or person and that
causes personal injury and / or property damage. Many factors contribute to the
risk of collision such as vehicle type, speed, road environment, driver's
experience, behavior and physical condition.
The causes of road
accidents:
• Aggressiveness on
roads
• Alcohol
Alcohol and driving
do not mix. Even in small doses, alcohol slows reflexes and increases the risk
of an accident.
• Distraction and
inattention while driving
Distraction and
inattention behind the wheel: an underestimated danger and responsible for an
accident in 4!
• Drug addicts
Drugs are all incompatible with
driving, all the more so if they are mixed with alcohol, medications or other
substances.
• Tired
Fatigue or
drowsiness decreases the ability to drive and may be the cause of an accident.
• Speed
Inadequate speed is
one of the leading causes of fatal accidents in Switzerland. Unsuitable speed
does not necessarily mean excessive speed, but speed not adapted to traffic
conditions.
Consequences of
accidents:
We all know that
road accidents are sometimes fatal, some people are killed and others have
life-long consequences. Like physical and / or mental disability. But in recent
years we have noticed that the number of deaths decreases in 2008. It has
suffered a decline of 2% compared to 2007, that is to say 4615 deaths against
4709 in 2007. We note that the number of deaths decreases as well as the number
of injuries, but the severity of accidents increases.
Road accidents are
very often responsible for handicaps such as paraplegia, quadriplegia,
paralysis, amputation that make these people affected. But there are also
mental handicaps such as the incoherence in his remarks, permanent agitation,
neurological impairment, ...
These people can not
live alone it must depend on someone permanently.
It can also be seen
that men are more concerned with road accidents than women, that is to say 29
women against 81 men per million victims, these accidents will leave them
severe handicaps for the rest of their lives. But it is the young people who
are most affected and will have the maximum health, family, economic and social
consequences.
Solutions:
1. No alcohol at the
wheel.
2. No behavior at
risk (and punished by the law) when driving: pick up phone, read, eat, drink or
smoke while driving.
3. Maintain your
vehicle regularly. Observe the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations and
pay particular attention to the condition of the tires in your vehicle (wear,
inflation ...)
4. Do not get into
the vicious circle of aggressive driving. It is sometimes difficult but it is
always better to ignore the aggressiveness of other drivers and refrain from
any overbid, whatever the circumstances. In case of obvious abuse, you can
always inform the police.
5. Observe the
minimum safety distances, especially on the motorway, using the markings on the
ground specifically designed for this purpose on the right of the road.
6. Strive to
maintain a steady speed, without slowing down or steady acceleration. This will
allow you to reduce your fuel consumption.
7. Check your
mirrors before driving and keep them constantly on the lookout.
