Environmental Protection

Protecting the environment consists of taking measures to limit or eliminate the negative impact of human activities on its environment.

Beyond the simple conservation of nature, it is a matter of understanding the systemic, and possibly planetary, functioning of the environment; identify human actions that damage it to the point of harming current or future generations; and to put in place corrective actions. This action is therefore both scientific, because it requires to develop our knowledge for the moment limited in this field; citizen, since the decisions to be made have a cost for the present generations, and an impact for future generations; political, because the decisions to be taken are necessarily collective and sometimes planetary.

Scientific knowledge of the global functioning of the planet is very recent; it was only towards the end of the nineteenth century that the necessary theories were formed. It took almost a century to discover that human activities had not only a significant impact on this environment, but that it was in danger of being definitive. In 1972, the simultaneous creation of the United Nations Environment Program and corresponding governmental bodies in the developed countries marks the starting point for a collective commitment.

Recycling[

Recycling is becoming increasingly necessary to manage the scarcity of natural resources and to avoid the proliferation of waste in nature. It is particularly important for plastics, as well as for most metals, whose available resources are decreasing.

Pollution

The theme is not new, but it is formalized with the notion of responsibility associated with pollution and then polluter pays, which facilitates the legal and regulatory approach.

Utility of biodiversity [

For centuries, the agricultural revolution has led to a deliberate and continuous depletion of the biodiversity of inhabited areas; this was considered normal and even desirable.

Resource Finite

The word finitude applies here to natural resources, especially fossil fuels and metals. The scarcity of metals has been studied by Philippe Bihouix and Benoît De Guillebon, supported by the Association des Centraliens5.

Sustainable development

Since the late 1980s, and especially since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, world leaders have been led to redefine the notion of development to take into account not only the needs of the present but also the generations, as defined in the Brundtland Report (1987). Sustainable development advocates global action and is based on the three pillars of the environment, the social and the economy, in a holistic approach. Sustainable development has led to action plans such as Agenda 21 (1992) or Sustainable Development Goals (2012).
