The lion and the hare

A lion prevented the animals from coming to drink at a watering place. It was therefore decided by mutual agreement between all the animals and the lion that an animal should be sacrificed, drawn by lot, per day, to satisfy the lion, and that in exchange the latter would let the others come to quench their thirst water point.

This was done. The sacrificed animal was accompanied and left to the lion every day.

The hare's turn came.

The latter asked for a favor: not to be accompanied in exchange for what he promised to deliver the animals of the lion.

The animals accepted.

The hare went off alone, and when the lion saw him arrive, he was astonished to see only one animal. The hare explained to him: "There is another lion, not far from there, and he ate, in spite of my protestations, the other hare that was destined for you!"

The furious lion asked to see where this adversary was hiding. The hare took him to the edge of a well and approached the lion and said to him, "Hold me tight against you, for I am afraid of the lion that is hidden in the well!"

This was done.

The lion, leaning over, saw a "lion" at the bottom of the well, holding his own meal in his paws. Crazy with rage, releasing the hare, he jumped ... and drowned.

Thus were delivered all the other animals of the cruelty of the lion.
