Nizar Kabbani was born on March 21, 1923 in Damascus, Syria. He wrote his first poems in 1944, recounting adolescent loves. He graduated from the University of Damascus in 1945 with a degree in diplomacy and works in the Syrian embassies in Cairo, Ankara, Madrid, Beijing and Beirut.
After the Arab defeat against Israel in 1967, he became a spokesman for the cause and blasted the Arab leaders, he said, for the disaster. That same year he founded his publishing house "Nizar Kabbani" in London.
His writings take on a more political twist, whereas in the beginning, his major source of inspiration was the theme of the woman, viewed from a new angle, cutting with the traditional image. Very bold initiative for the time and values of society, according to the critics. His poetic language, because it is close to the spoken language, has earned him great popularity beyond the usual framework of intellectual spheres.
His poems are set in song and performed by the Egyptian Oum Kalsoum. Kabbani is translated into English and French. His second wife is killed in Beirut in an attack perpetrated by Iran against the Syrian Embassy where she works. After living in Geneva and Paris, he settled at the end of his life in London, where he died of a heart attack on April 30, 1998 at age 75.
