Mahmoud DERWICH. Biography of the Poet:


 Mahmoud Derwich was born in 1942, in Palestine. In the Galilean village of Birwa. In 1948, he took refuge with his family in Lebanon. His village, fallen into the hands of the Zionist forces, is stricken from the map. In 1950, he returned to Palestine, "infiltrated". He continues his primary and secondary studies. His career begins with the daily al-Ittihad where he is employed as an editor. He then became editor of the literary magazine al-Jadid. His writings have earned him many stays in prison. From 1961, it is forbidden to travel outside the city of Haifa where he resides. In 1967, he was subjected to house arrest. In 1970, he is forced to leave his homeland. Its cities of exile will be first Moscow then Cairo, Beirut, Tunis and Paris.
