Donut, or donut, literally "dough," means "sweet donut" in North America (donuts in Canada francophone , masculine noun, and donut Louisiana as well as for the Acadians ). The most common version is a toric-shaped, dense-textured, often icing-coated version, which was popularized in the 1950s by the fast-food chains Dunkin 'Donuts and Krispy Kreme. In Canada, this pastry is mainly served by Tim Hortons.
Donuts, or donuts, can sometimes be filled with a creamy preparation, which is similar to Italian zeppola (it),   or jam. They are usually accompanied by a coffee. Small spherical donuts are called donut holes, or "donut holes" in Canada.
History
There is no agreement on the origin of this pastry. It is necessary to distinguish donut recipes from Europe with settlers, probably as early as the 17th century, from the recipes of the popular ring-shaped donut, more contemporary, but whose origin remains obscure. The first donuts arrived in America in the seventeenth century with the settlers from the Netherlands and their oliebollen ("balls cooked in oil"). The introduction of the donut is also claimed in the eighteenth century by Quebecers (see section "Donut in Quebec") as by Louisiana. In both cases, the origin is French. The first reference to the term donut in an Anglo-American cookbook goes back to 1803 according to Paul R. Mullins, author of the book Glazed America: A History of the Donut. The American Hanson Gregory claims to have invented the ring form in 1847.10 Finally, the tabloid Daily Mail advances in 2013 the hypothesis of a British origin, in the years 1800-181011.
Nutrition
The United States Department of Agriculture Nutritional Database, version SR28 of 2015, provides the following average values for 100 g of donut: 434 k Cal of energy provided by 5.3 g of protein, 24 , 9 g of fat and 47.1 g of carbohydrates (including 18.1 g of sugars) 12.
Marketing
In North America, donuts are generally sold in specialty duty-free shops, donut shops, 13 units or a dozen. The main retail brands are Dunkin 'Donuts, Krispy Kreme and Tim Hortons14, which are present throughout North America. They can also be bought in supermarkets and grocery stores.
Media representation
The donut was popularized outside of North America by the animated series The Simpsons as Homer Simpson's Homosexual Sin.
He is also considered, in several fictions (High flying cop, Jesse Stone, Criminal spirits, New York, special unit ...), like the favorite pastry of the policemen.
The donut in Louisiana

The preparation of donuts (fritters or square French donuts) arrived in Louisiana with the French colonization. It is possible that the recipe was brought by the Ursulines in 1725, but nothing proves it. The most famous version of the Louisiana donut today is the one proposed by the Café du Monde, founded in 1862 in the French Quarter of the Old Square in New Orleans.
