the province of Al-Qadisiyya takes its name from the city of Al-Qadisiyya
located on the right bank of the Euphrates, 50 km south of Najaf. This city was
the theater of a decisive battle in the conquest of Persia by the Arabs around
636, remained in history under the name of battle of al-Qadisiyya. The city of
Al-Qadisiyya is now in the province of An-Najaf.
Geography
Al-Qādisiyya is one of the 18 provinces of
Iraq. It is located in the center of the country. Before 1976 it was a part of
the province of Ad-Diwaniya which also included the provinces of Al-Muthanna
and An-Najaf.
Al-Qadisiyya1 is located on the right bank
of the Euphrates River, 50 km south of Najaf in Iraq in the province of
An-Najaf.
History
Al-Qadisiyya was the scene of a decisive
battle in the conquest of Persia by the Arabs around 6362. Muslim troops of the
caliph 'Omar led by Sa`d ibn Abī Waqqās despite their numerical inferiority
beat the army of the Sassanid emperor Yazdgard III, led by Rostam Farrokhzād.

Commercial importance
Before the conquest of Persia by the Arabs,
Al-Qadisiyya was only a small village near the Udhayb Fortress. Then the city
knew a strong growth because it was on the road from Baghdad to Mecca.
