Port Said

Port Saïd is a small port city in north-eastern Egypt with about 500,000 inhabitants. It is an essential city of Egyptian commerce, just like Alexandria. A good part of Egyptian productions such as rice or cotton pass through this port where they will be exported abroad. In addition, the place is an important point of supplying ships from the Suez Canal, not far from the city. It is also considered one of the most beautiful Egyptian cities, thanks in particular to its many old houses of colonial style and even neo-Gothic.

The city was born of a crazy project but succeeds; that of connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea by a canal in the nineteenth century. It is the French Ferdinand de Lesseps who will lead the project in 1859, when the city was born. The Viceroy of Egypt at the time, Said Pasha, gives him his name. He wanted the city to have a port worthy of the name, and will work with Lesseps on the project. In 1869, the work was completed. The port is inaugurated and we will even call this day a "feast of the century".

This new city, which began as a makeshift encampment for Egyptian workers and their families, soon became a dynamic city with a large tobacco and chemistry industry. Not to mention its important fishing economy and its production of carpets. Since 1956, the city has grown considerably. Various crises will however upset the city. It will undergo some shelling but will always recover. Although in 1967 and 1973 the city was partly destroyed in its conflict with Israel, the city was quickly rebuilt, and its port activity, a closed time (from 1967 to 1975), quickly resumed its activity.

At first glance, the city has no tourist attraction. However, even if in Port Said we do not find any pharaonic or ancient monuments, the city has its interest. Its famous colonial houses with large balconies have forged its reputation and charm. It was the French who had the initiative with the Egyptians to build the canal, and legend has it that the statue of liberty should have been erected in the place, but the khedive of the time having found the project too expensive , would have abandoned it.

It is interesting that Port Said - besides proposing an incessant ballet of ships of all kinds, allows by taking the ferry to meet on the other side of the shore, in Asia. The Governorate of the city is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the mouth of the Suez Canal, and has an area of 1351 km2. The part of the city that extends to the east allows to meet on the Asian continent in Port-Fouad (residential area). In 1976, the city obtained the status of free zone, hence the increase in its traffic, some goods can be exempted from taxes and customs duties. It is interesting to know that the city of Alexandria is only four and a half hours away, and Cairo is three hours away.

Although the city still has only a young past, it is full of interesting museums, such as the Archaeological Museum opposite the pedestal of the statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps, or the Museum of Modern Art which includes works on the history of the city seen by its own artists.
