Reptiles are animals that lay eggs

Reptiles are vertebrate animals that can live in the land. They are therefore able to move on land or in the water to support themselves. They are actually the first animals that prehistory came out of the water and populated the land spaces of the globe.

The reptiles lay eggs whose shells are resistant to the air and allow them not to lay eggs in the water like amphibians. Their skin is as effective against desiccation as exposure to air and is made of scales like snakes.

The ability of the reptile to live on dry land is that it breathes and so it has to go back out of the water to catch its breath. Turtles, snakes, lizards and crocodiles are reptiles. They are cold-blooded animals.

Reptiles, like snakes, have moults or they lose their old skin made too small and so they can get fat. Turtles and crocodiles do not really moult because it is an enlargement of their scales that allows them to grow.

Many reptiles use their tails as a defense like lizards. Others just hide in their shell like turtles, but they also have a terrible bite. Crocodiles and caimans are predators and their skin is very rigid. Their mouths are elongated and have pointed teeth.

A reptile may be exclusively carnivorous as the crocodile who only eats meat. Some eat fruits, insects like turtles and lizards.

Many people use a reptile as a pet. The turtle and some lizards are very popular as pets and the sale of reptiles is regulated in many countries.
