THE BARIBAL
Physical description
The baribal is also called the black bear. It measures between 1.50
meters and 2 meters, weighing 60 to 100 kg for females and 110 to 270 kg for
males. It has small, bright black eyes, a long pointed snout and a short tail.
His hind legs are longer than the front legs, so he can stand and walk only on
his hind legs. Each leg has 5 fingers with claws at their end. These claws are
not retractable: it is used to tear, dig, climb and kill all kinds of animals
in one stroke.
His place of life
The baribal lives mainly in North America, between Canada, Alaska
and northern Mexico, on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The black bear is
smaller than its congeners, the polar bear and the brown bear. The baribal
drinks large quantities of water, which is why he lives near a water point.
With the arrival of warm climates, he migrates to the heights of the mountains,
hiding under trees and shrubs to protect himself from the sun. It is a solitary
animal, except during the mating season.
His diet
The baribal is omnivorous, which means that it eats everything,
even if its diet is mainly based on plants (75% of its diet): acorns, fruits
and dried fruits, herbs, grasses, but also insects, fish and carrion.
In cold weather, he lives in slow motion, consuming the fats he has
stored, especially in autumn, just before winter settles.
His reproduction
The rutting period extends from the end of May to July, during
which time the baribal breaks its loneliness. Gestation of females lasts
between 6 and 7 months. A few months before birth, the female eats everything
because she has to gain weight and strengthen herself. She then gives life to 1
or 2 cubs. The first months of their lives, in winter, they live cloistered in
the den, at the mercy of their mother. Only the mother educates the cubs.
His life expectancy
Baribals live on average 10 years.
His shout
The baribal screams, groans and claps his teeth.
Particular signs
Like all bears, the baribal is threatened by both hunting and
poaching, but also by global warming.
This bear is a good swimmer and a good climber, which makes him
very agile and survive the hunt.
