Health
Upon entry into the
territory, you do not have to provide a certificate of vaccination against
smallpox or cholera. However, it is better to immunize against hepatitis A and
B, tetanus and cholera. If you sink into the rainforest, remember to guard
against malaria; consult your doctor before departure. In Malaysia, the
appropriate medication is dispensed only on prescription. To keep mosquitoes
away, use repellents, insecticide coils and mosquito nets. Dengue epidemics,
against which there is no preventive treatment, occur regularly. Only way to
avoid contagion: the repellent. In case of high fever, consult without waiting
for a doctor.
Treat cuts and
scrapes immediately, as the humidity in the climate delays healing and may
cause ulcers. In most cities, pharmacies deliver the correct treatment without
a prescription. In addition, ask about the potential dangers of local wildlife.
On their first visit
to a tropical country, many tourists take some time to acclimatize. In these
latitudes, drink at least 2 liters (8 to 10 glasses) of water a day and flee
the sun between 11 am and 3 pm Tap water in the city is drinkable, but prefer
bottled water or boil it. Avoid ice cubes served in stalls or small cafes, as
well as peeled fruit offered by street vendors. Food from restaurants and
street caterers is not a health problem.
The haze,
particularly thick at a certain season, affects people suffering from
respiratory diseases, especially asthmatics. If this happens, do not put your
nose out or wear a mask. The monsoon that succeeds fortunately allows to clean
the air. Get health insurance before you leave.
Pharmacies and
Hospitals - Most localities and shopping centers have pharmacies, often members
of a chain, such as Watson's, Georgetown Caring, Vitacare and Guardian. In
general, a pharmacist is on duty every weekday from 10 am to 5 pm Many drugs
are dispensed without a prescription - check the expiry dates. You can also buy
care products. In the absence of a 24-hour pharmacy, private clinics welcome
you at any time of day or night; they provide the remedies after consulting the
doctor on call.
Medications are not
very expensive, especially those made in Malaysia. Malaysian doctors are some
of the best in Southeast Asia, and speak English. In recent years, Kuala Lumpur,
Penang and Melaka have been banking on "medical tourism", and private
hospitals are working to improve their level of service to attract foreign
clients. Public and private hospitals have state-of-the-art equipment,
specialized clinics and qualified medical staff. Healing in Malaysia, whether
it is treatment or screening, is much cheaper than in the West. The price of a
GP consultation is MYR 20-30, and a specialist at MYR 80. In addition, public
hospitals charge lower rates than private ones (see Ministry of Health website
http://www.moh.gov.my/ ), but often assume patience. For a list of these
facilities, see http://www.moh.gov.my/english.php/database_stores/store_view/3
, and dental clinics at http://www.moh.gov .my / english.php / database_stores /
store_view / 7 . Private hospitals are concentrated in urban areas. In case of
minor problems, go to the private clinics in all the cities and open some of
them 24 hours a day.
Dental Clinics -
Malaysians call dentists from doctor gigi (doctors of teeth). Many of these
practitioners have received training abroad, as evidenced by the quality of the
benefits. Rates are much lower than those prevailing in the West. In Sabah and
Sarawak, you will be better treated in a private practice than in the dental
clinics of the main public hospitals. By appointment only. The consultation
schedule starts at MYR 30. The clinic directory can be found on the website
www.mda.org.my
security
In Malaysia as
elsewhere, pickpockets and perpetrators of snatching - most often 2 individuals
on a motorcycle or by car - are the main plague. If you get your handbag, do
not resist, because the perpetrators are often armed with knives they do not
hesitate to use. On a sidewalk, always walk in the opposite direction of
traffic and keep your bag on the opposite side of the cars.
Unless staying in a
luxury hotel, do not leave valuables in your room, except in the safe. Always
keep your passport and money with you, even at the beach, or drop them in the
hotel's main safe. Wear your camera or camera over the shoulder and check that
your backpack is properly attached. During a sports expedition - diving, for
example - entrust your business to the tour operator. Traveling by public
transport does not present any particular risk; simply check that your luggage
is not inadvertently landed during stops. Similarly, you do not risk much to
walk at night, especially in tourist sites; however, prefer the lit
neighborhoods.
Hitchhiking is very
rare and provokes frustration and even danger. Borrow public transport, slow,
not punctual, but economic and numerous.
The tourism police
conduct frequent patrols. You will recognize her in her uniform: a hat with a
checkered headband, a dark blue shirt and trousers, a red and blue badge marked
with the letter "I" (for "Information") on the breast
pocket. If not, contact the nearest police station if necessary, or dial 999
from a landline or 112 from a mobile phone.
Scams - Despite their
sense of hospitality, Malaysians rarely approach strangers. Also, stay on your
guard if a stranger offers to meet a "parent who has always wanted to
visit your country" or participate in bets "where you win every
time." Know that the beggars who ask you in the street are not all that
poor. Also be wary of individuals who pretend to be police officers and ask you
to present your passport. The police do this only if you have committed an
offense or during a night raid. Never buy anything from a scammer, not even a
transport ticket.
