The nymph is one of the stages of insect metamorphosis

The nymph is one of the physiological states of an insect that follows the larval stage, by which it then becomes an adult that can fly and reproduce. It is one of the stages of complete metamorphosis insects during which it changes a lot of appearance to take its final adult form.

The various metamorphoses of organisms of the insect class are necessary for their evolution. The egg that is laid according to the ritual of the species becomes a larva, which will eat continuously to grow and moult. The caterpillar is one of the forms that a larva takes, but it does not necessarily always have this form for all orders of insects.
The nymph state follows the larval state, and according to the species, it will have an appearance of its own. For some, it takes this form for a while, relatively short or long. It is during this phase that the wings and other parts of the adult's body appear. In Ephemeroptera, we speak of subimago, which is the stage that precedes their adult form. In the Hymenoptera, the Coleoptera, we speak of a free nymph who is white and motionless until it develops into an adult.

In Lepidoptera, it uses silk threads to secrete and weave a cocoon around her to protect herself during her passage as a nymph mummy, which is actually called a chrysalis. Enveloped in its cocoon, the chrysalis will then turn into the adult insect, the imago, and we do not see them during this state of transformation. Depending on the species of insect, the development of this metamorphosis can last a few days, or weeks.

During this period of growth, the nymph usually does not eat because its entire system is changing, and even the digestive system and its mouthparts can be affected. That's why the larvae eat continuously to provide their body with all the nutrients and energy needed for this step. In flies, the nymph is called a pupa, which is the equivalent of the chrysalis for butterflies, where it is transformed into an envelope that protects it.

The appearance and size of the nymphs vary according to the family, and even the species of insect that is in metamorphosis. Nymphs are also used for incompletely metamorphosing insects that resemble their adult form, but whose tiny wings are not usable until they have developed, as is the case with many Hemiptera. Others are really different from their adult form and it is only through experience that we can identify them. The size, color, patterns, shape, season ... are clues used to identify the species to which a nymph belongs.

Some insects, such as dragonflies, have aquatic nymphs and live in water until they reach adulthood. The ladybug larvae look like little caterpillars, then settle on a leaf where it stays stuck for a while to moult, then comes out of her nymph skin once her adult makeover is over.

Nymphs are a great source of food for all orders and families of animals. Their more limited means often make them easy prey, and they are important for many species in the food chain.
