Libya's economic and financial situation The Libyan economy, which is highly dependent on the oil sector, bears the brunt of the political and security situation in the country as well as the drop in oil prices on the international markets. Since the revolution, four years of recession have severely degraded Libya's public and external accounts, leading to a sharp decline in foreign exchange reserves. This shortage of foreign exchange is weighing on the supply of foreign products and on the cost of living, which has risen sharply in recent months. Given the political and security context, structural reforms that are essential for the proper functioning of the economy are not implemented; reforms that are all the more important as current oil prices will not allow Libya to regain pre-revolution levels of income, even if production is restored
